The New York State Boxing Hall of Fame (NYSBHOF) has announced legendary Panamanian world champion Alfonso Teófilo "Panama Al" Brown as one of the 16 members of its 2024 class.
The 12th Annual NYSBHOF Induction Dinner will be held Sunday evening (12:30-5:30 PM ET), September 15, 2024, at Russo's on the Bay in Howard Beach, New York. Tickets can be purchased by contacting NYSBHOF President Jack Hirsch at (516) 790-7592 or ajhirsch5@aol.com.
“Panama Al” Brown, a long-time bantamweight champion who spent much of his career fighting in Harlem, will be honored posthumously.
Alfonso Teófilo Brown was born in Colón, Panama, on July 5, 1902, and died in New York on April 11, 1951. He was very popular in France and had about 40 fights in Europe between 1929 and 1934.
He is legendary for becoming the first Hispanic boxer to be a world champion and is widely considered one of the best bantamweights in history. He had a record of 123 wins, 18 losses, and 10 draws, with 55 knockouts, placing him on the exclusive list of boxers who achieved 50 or more victories by knockout. He was the world bantamweight champion for six years and, during that time, made 11 title defenses against the best of his era.
