WARNER CENTER WAR II A HUGE SUCCESS

PhilBoxing.com

Woodland Hills, CA:- Kahren Harutyunyan, the ex-NABO Jr. bantamweight champion retired from boxing and turned to promotions. To gain more know how, he took and completed a Masters Certificate in Fight Promotions from the Fight Promotions University run by Roy Englebrecht at Irvine, California.

Last Saturday, at the posh five-star Marriot Hotel in this city, he put up his second gig. He dubbed it as ?Warner Center War II?.

The fight card show-cased the young and raising stars from the Armenian-American community from the nearby city of Glendale and a couple of boxers from the Wildcard Gym of Freddie Roach against pugs from as far as Sacramento, Salinas, Oak Hills, Pueblo, Colorado, Houston, Texas and Sinaloa, Mexico.

Harutyunyan would have loved to have the promotions in the City of Glendale, but in that City, boxing is banned. Harutyunyan is however spearheading a movement that is actively lobbying the Glendale City Council to repeal the ordinance banning boxing so that his promotions can be held in Glendale where the largest Armenian-American community in greater Los Angeles is located. One could only imagine what a market that would be.

?War at Warner Center II? consisted of four and six rounder?s with the main event involving Glendale?s fast raising star, Vardan Gasparyan. Gasparyan, in spite of coming back from 8 months of inactivity gave the crowd a rousing performance. Matched against Anthony Charnell of Sacramento, Gasparyan proved too much for the pug from the State Capital. He knocked him down 3 times leading to a TKO at 2:50 in the first round. Gasparyan thus improved to 10-1-4 (5KO). Charnell fell to 6-5-1, 5KO.

In the second 6 rounder, lightweight Art Hovhannesyan earned UD over a late sub, Luis Lugo. The judges scored 58-56, 58-56 and 59-55 all in favor of Hovhannesyan. Hovhannesyan improved to 7-0-1, 2KO while Lugo, the slugger from Sinaloa, Mexico dropped to 10-5-0, (6KO)

In the most exciting four rounder of the evening, Freddie Roach? Dean Byrne, a welterweight native of Dublin, Ireland kept his record spotless with a second round right hand power shot that dropped Geoffrey Spruiell of Pueblo, Colorado for good. Byrne improved to 9-0-0, 3KO while Spruiell fell to 7-6-0, 2KO.

Two unbeaten welterweights, Max Skayzer and Johnny Suarez fought a 4 rounder too. The result was a UD with the following scores: 39-35, 39-35 and 39-36 all for Skayzer. With the win he is now 4-0-1, 1KO while Suarez fell to 2-1-2, 2KO.

In another 4 rounder, Gabriel Tolmajyan (3-1-0) beat Sammy Yniquez (2-3-1) via a UD.

Max Skayzer winner over Johnny Suarez.

Roger Vargas winner over Ian Mauleon.

Vardan Gasparyan winner over Anthony Charnell.

Filipino-American Ian Mauleon, formerly from Oakland and now residing in Los Angeles fell to Roger Vargas, the half brother of former world champion, Fernando Vargas. Vargas who was wrongly introduced by the ring announcer as Rogelio Romo and Mauleon fought like the rookies they are-slow and boring with not too many telling blows to show for. Vargas was declared as winner via a UD improving his record to 2-0-2, 1KO, while Mauleon stayed winless at 0-2-0.

In the final 4 rounder, Vachick Avagyan, a super flyweight making his debut scored a 3rd round TKO over Constancio Alvaro (1-2-4) of Salinas. Avagyan ended the fight with a hard left to the head at 1:24 of round 3.
