GORRES' CHOICES

PhilBoxing.com

Of all the fighters belonging to the famed ALA Gym of our esteemed friend Tony Aldeguer and his son Michael Aldeguer, a truly decent young man, our particular favorite for years has been Z ?The Dream? Gorres.

Our affection for Gorres stems from an appreciation of his classy style in the ring but far more importantly his remarkable and respectful demeanor outside. All the ALA boys exhibit these same traits perhaps in different ways or in different degrees, but we?ve followed the career of Gorres since the time another esteemed friend ? the eminent lawyer-sportsman Rudy Salud teamed up with Aldeguer to handle the career of Gorres - and we have been impressed by what we've seen.

When he was robbed of the WBO super flyweight championship in the ?Moment of Truth? fight card staged in the typical classy Aldeguer fashion, we probably agonized more that Gorres himself. Referee Samuel Viruet and judges Raul Caiz Sr and Chuck Giampa in an unholy alliance of incompetents or worse, deprived the young man of his just due in the title fight against Mexico?s Fernando Montiel.

In the eyes of most, except that of international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz who contests our position at every turn, Gorres won by at least 7 rounds to 5. In fact judge Danny Nelson who told us later he scored it as he saw it, had Gorres winning 115-111. It was a case of literally getting ? pardon the language ? screwed in our own home town!

Despite the painful loss Gorres and the Aldeguers took it like genuine sportsmen and gentlemen but we felt then ? as we feel now ? that as journalists we have to set aside such niceties and tell it like it is.

Gorres then scored an eighth round TKO over former world light flyweight champion Eric Ortiz to win the IBF Intercontinental super flyweight in what was also peddled as an eliminator after which he was required to fight a title eliminator against Vic Darchinyan to earn a mandatory shot at Dimitri Kirilov. The February 2 eliminator ended in a draw that was considered controversial by both sides.

Darchinyan earned the mandatory title shot at champion Kirilov according to IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker because at the time of the Gorres fight Darchinyan was ranked No. 3 and Gorres No. 4 and there was no No.1 or 2 which in itself strikes us as ridiculous.

Logic dictates ? and the understanding of the Aldeguers was the same - that Gorres would get a title shot at the winner between Kirilov and Darchinyan. But to our utter consternation Tucker informed us that Gorres who was elevated to No.3 after Darchinyan got the title shot, must now fight Jorge Arce or any other available contender down the line for the No.1 spot and ?if he (Gorres) wants a guaranteed shot at Darchinyan he must win the eliminator and become No.1 and the mandatory challenger.?

What the IBF is effectively saying is that Gorres must fight two eliminators to earn one title shot despite the fact that Darchinyan didn?t win the eliminator but was still given a crack at the title. Using the same logic that Drachinyan was one notch above Gorres and that?s why he got the title fight, why can?t the IBF use the same line of reasoning and since Gorres drew the eliminator and is now No.3 , give the Filipino the title shot.

It reminds us of the recent farce of an interim super flyweight championship between AJ ?Bazooka? Banal and Rafael ?El Torito? Concepcion for which the WBA collected $20,000 in sanction fees and then approved a title fight between the two top Japanese ? No.1 Nobuo Nashiro and No.2 Kohei Kono on September 15 . This means that the interim championship will be worthless when there?s a winner between Nashiro and Kono because you can?t conceivably have a champion and an interim champion at the same time.

To add to the mockery, the WBA claimed that after Cristian Mijares defeated Alexander Munoz to be recognized as unified champion ?the regular title status was automatically declared as vacant.? How in the name of sanity can that happen? Boxrec.com now reports that the so-called super champion Mijares will defend the WBA super flyweight title against Thailand?s Chatchai Sasakul which means we will effectively have two champions and one interim champion in the roster of the WBA! Simply put, it?s a stinking mess!!
