PhilBoxing.com

Santo Tomas City, Batangas---Asia's first grandmaster and chess hall-of-famer Eugene Torre has been invited as special guest during the opening ceremony of the Rotary International District (RID) 3820 Open Rapid chess tournament on June 8 at the SM City, Santo Tomas City, Batangas.

RID 3820 District Governor William Pastor Delloro Jr. said the event aims to promote the board games especially among the youth while facilitating the development of the talented enthusiasts' skills and confidence.

“Part of providing support to our athletes is giving them the opportunity to see the people who inspire them,” Delloro said.
The event is a seven-round Swiss system tournament open to the first 100 registrants while players and chess enthusiasts will get the rare opportunity to meet the country’s chess legend.
The Swiss system, which pairs players with similar scores, has been the leading format in chess tournaments since the 1940s.

Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster in 1974, is a member of the Philippine Olympiad team a record 23 times, who won three individual medals on board one (silver at Nice 1974 and bronze at Malta 1980 and Dubai 1986) which is busy embarking on a grassroots program for chess.

This one-day Fide-rated chess competition, using a seven-round Swiss system format with 15 minutes plus five seconds delay offers PHP15,000 in cash and trophy to the champion.

Supported by SM City-Sto Tomas, Chooks-to-Go, Rotary Club of Nuvali, Rotary Club of Cavinti, Rotary Club of Cabuyao Circle, Rotary Club of Atimonan Sunrise, St. Peregrine Dental Clinic, Dr. Audwin Verzosa and Dr. Herdeza Hernandez of Sydney, Australia, the proceeds of the event will be donated to the End Polio Society.

International Master Michael Concio, one of the top woodpushers of the star-studded Dasmarinas Chess Academy playing under the guidance of mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas, looms as the player to beat in the seven-round Swiss system, FIDE-rated tournament, owing to his recent achievements.

Concio is fresh from winning the 64th San Carlos Charter Day open rapid chess tournament at the Marina Park in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental last Sunday.

Among the chess players expected to give Concio a run for his money are IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Daet, Camarines Sur) , FM David Elorda (Manila), AGM Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo (Calamba City) , AGM Rey Julius Taguba (Cabuyao City), AGM Apollo Agapay (Cabuyao City) , AIM Alexandra Sydney Paez (Cabuyao City), AFM Alexie Sweden Paez (Cabuyao City), Kevin Arquero (Mindoro) , Alexa Schaan Paez (Cabuyao City) , Engr.
