PhilBoxing.com

Montesilvano, Italy---FILIPINO FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo downed Vietnamese FIDE Master Nguyen Quoc Hy in 46 moves of Sicilian defense, Rossolimo Variation on Monday to bolster his chances in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy.

Bacojo, the pride of Dasmariñas City, Cavite, climbed to 5.5 points, right behind Russian pacesetter IM Aleksey Grebnev, who toted 6.5 points in seven outings after beating Hungarian FM Agoston Juhasz in 38 moves of another Sicilian defense, Rossolimo Variation in the Boys under-18 section.

Sharing second to seventh places with Bacojo were IM Aldiyar Nsat of Kazakhstan, FM Aron Pasti of Hungary, IM A R Ilamparthi of India, FM Tymon Czernek of Poland and CM Chakraborty Mayank of India.

However, FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca was beaten by FM Pawel Sowinski of Poland in 40 moves of King's Indian defense.
Arca, another top player of Dasmariñas City, Cavite under the guidance of national coach FM Roel Abelgas failed to convert his winning position into victory.

Arca committed a big blunder in the 40th move by capturing Rook to d7 and he didn't see the reply of his opponent Rook h5+, a Rook sacrifice in the 40th move, overlooked an inevitable mate of pawn.

Thus, Arca was stuck at 5.0 points and dropped into a tie for 15th to 24th placers in the Boys under-14 section.

"Sana magtuloy-tuloy panalo ni FM Mark Jay Bacojo sa mga nalalabing rounds at kumpiyansa ako makakabawi si FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca ," said Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., Philippine Delegation Head who is also part of the coaching staff that includes Woman Fide Master Shaina Mae Mendoza and Arena FIDE Master Ederwin Estavillo.

Mark Gabriel Usman defeated Marek Durovka of Slovakia while Charly Jhon Yamson drew with Markus Orri Johannsson of Iceland.
Usman now has 4.0 points while Yamson got 2.5 points in the Boys under-14 section.

After back-to-back losses, National Master Oscar Joseph Cantela bounced back by beating Ilja KuprijansTestelecs of Latvia to raise his total 3.0 points and joint 83rd placers in the Boys under-16 section.

In the distaff side, Woman National Master Francesca Largo absorbed her second straight loss this time to WFM Erdenebayar Margadgua of Mongolia and was stuck at 3.5 points in the Girls under-18 section.

Woman National Master Kaye Lalaine Regidor split the point with Katerina Braeutigam of Germany to score 4.5 points in the Girls under-16 section.

Woman National Master Bonjoure Fille Suyamin subdued Lucia Stoll of France to improve her record to 4.5 points in the Girls under-14 section.

In another Girls under-14 section matches, Jirah Floravie Cutiyog yielded to Halder Sneha of India, Anica Shey Dimatangihan crushed Maria Ioanna Haapsal of Estonia and Maureinn Lepaopao dropped her games against Yvonne Adego Mwashe of Kenya.

After Round 7, Cutiyog has now 4.0 points, Dimatangihan got 3.0 points and Lepaopao was stuck at 1.0 point.

The Philippine chess team’s campaign in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship is backed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, headed by its chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.-Marlon Bernardino-
