Ex-De La Salle coach wins US chess tourney

MANILA---Filipino John Renan Lumbera defeated American John Vandenberg, 1.5-0.5, to win the Ontario Chess Group Battle of the Champions at the Ontario Chess Club in Ontario, California last Sunday, March 12.
Lumbera, a Learning Ambassador at Amazon LGB5 in Orange Show Road in San Bernardino, California was in-form all throughout the Finals.
“It was a nerve-wracking and intense battle with Vanderberg. I just got lucky at the end," said the 38 year old Lumbera, who hails from Tiaong, Quezon, representing his place, San Bernardino, California.
The Filipino champion started his campaign by splitting the point with Rey Faminiano and Vandenberg then beating Ronnie Arbis and Greg Umali, respectively in the 4 rounds (Standard) Swiss 45 minutes plus 10 seconds delay time control format.
Lumbera and Vandenberg, both tallied 3.0 points apiece to arranged a titular showdown in this event. Both men are representing each city of South California with Mr. Jim Borja as the chairman while Mr. Arturo Baula as the tournament director.
Mr.Lumbera was the former Athletic Sports Supervisor and Chess Coach at De La Salle Lipa. He also won the 2019 Pasadena Chess Club Under 1800 category, the 2020 Temecula Chess Club Open Chess Championship and the 2021 LCC/USA chess tournament.-Marlon Bernardino-
