Officially named Association Football, the term Soccer comes from Oxford "-er" slang, which was practiced at the University of Oxford in England from about 1875, and is believed to have originated from the slang of Rugby School. Initially spelled "assoccer", it was later shortened to the modern spelling "soccer". This type of slang also gave birth to "rugger" for Rugby Football. The word Soccer got at its final form in 1895 and was first recorded in 1889 in its earlier form as "socca". Ddid not went down.
