FIDE World Seniors: Antonio settles for draw in 4th round By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sat, 19 Nov 2022 MANILA---Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Elo 2397) settled for a truce with Chilean Grandmaster Ivan Morovic Fernandez (Elo 2480) in 45 moves of Nimzo Indian Defense using the black pieces creating a 6-way tie for fourth place in the 4th round of the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy Friday night. Antonio, a former University of Manila standout, raised his total to 3.5 points, the same output as Fernandez, GM Frank Holzke of Hungrary, IM Krizsany Laszlo of Hungrary, IM David Cummings of Canada and FM Stephen Dishman of England. 8th seed GM Darcy Lima of Brazil toppled top seed GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia to keep a share of the lead together with GM Maxim Novik of Lithuania and GM Eric Prie of France in the Open 50+ division. Antonio, whose trip is being bankrolled by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation , Sen. Bong Go, Col. Jaime Osit Santos and Bayanihan Chess Club Co-Founding Chairman Dr. Joe Balinas, will slug it out GM Prie in the fifth round Saturday night. International Master Angelo Abundo Young (Elo 2309) split the point with Fide Master Rudolf Meessen (Elo 2158) of Belgium in 47 moves of Pribyl Defense using the black pieces to lead the huge group of 2.5 pointers that includes his fifth round opponent Fide Master Teo Kok Siong (Elo 2142) of Singapore. Meanwhile, International Master elect and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Elo 2051) was beaten by International Master Louis Roos (Elo 2293) of France, his second straight defeat. The 66 year old Bagamasbad remains at 2.0 points. After upsetting Grandmaster Jens Kristiansen (Elo 2353) of Denmark in the second round. His Cinderella story was halted by Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili (Elo 2268) of Georgia in the third round.This is the first loss of Bagamasbad. Bagamasbad who is fresh from winning the Asian Seniors Chess Championship in the Over 65 category last Oct. 14-22 in Auckland, New Zealand, will face Michael Gilbert (Elo 1845) of the United States in the next round.
