FIDE World Chess Seniors: Antonio keeps share of lead in Round 3 By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Nov 2022 MANILA---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Elo 2397) defeated Ali Hussein Al-Ali (Elo 2231) to keep the share of lead with ten two others in Open 50+ division in the on-going 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship being held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy Thursday night. Together with Antonio are GM Darcy Lima of Brazil, GM Ivan Morovic Fernandez of Chile, GM Maxim Novik of Lithuania, GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia, GM Frank Holzke and GM Klaus Bischoff of Germany, GM Eric Prie of France, GM Milos Pavlovic of Serbia, IM Krizsany Laszlo of Hungrary and IM David Cummings of Canada. Each of them totes 3.0 points after three rounds of play. Antonio, whose trip is being bankrolled by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, Sen. Bong Go, Col. Jaime Osit Santos and Bayanihan Chess Club Co-Founding Chairman Dr. Joe Balinas, will face Morovic Fernandez in the fourth round Friday night. International Master Angelo Abundo Young (Elo 2309) subdued Italian Fide Master Giuseppe Fabiano (Elo 2055) to score 2.0 points. Young will meet Fide Master Rudolf Meessen (Elo 2158) of Belgium in the next round. However, International Master elect and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (Elo 2051) was beaten by Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili (Elo 2268) of Georgia. Bagamasbad remains at 2.0 points in the 65+ over category. Bagamasbad will slug it out with International Master Louis Roos (Elo 2293) of France in the third round. The triumvirate would like to thank NCFP Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. and NCFP CEO GM Jayson O.
