Quijano, Oh, Mataac, Lanuza dominate Marinduque chess By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 17 Nov 2022 MANILA---21-year-old Toche Quijano, who is taking Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Marinduque State College from Buenavista, Marinduque defeated Mark Daniel Perilla of Sta. Cruz town in the last round to emerge solo champion in the Open Division while 9-year-old Lenette Shermaine Oh, a Grade IV student of Don Luis Hidalgo Memorial School, dominated the Kiddie Division of the 1st Governor's Chess Cup 2022 held at the MSC Audio-Visual Room in Tanza, Boac, Marinduque last Nov. 12. Tied with Perilla after four rounds with 4.0 points, Quijano whipped Perilla in the final round to finish with a perfect five points and bag the Champion’s Trophy and pocketed P6,000 cash prize in the Open Division class. Richard Pelaez of Gasan and Joseph Ricafrente of Torrijos came second and third places with 4.5 points apiece. Perilla remained at 4.0 points and dropped at fourth to seventh places together with John Christopher Corcuera of Sta. Cruz, Jeric Mendoza and Sergio Mataac. Oh, on the other hand, had a better tie break with fellow 4.0 pointer John Meneses Jayag to rule the kiddie division and take the coveted glass trophy plus P5,000. In the Women’s Division, three Sta. Cruz lady players Serelyn May Mataac of Sta. Cruz, Candy Mangandi, Vanessa Joy Regalado and Maricar Andrin of Gasan scored 4 points apiece and tied for 1st to 4th places. After tie-breaks, 17-year old Mataac emerged Champion and got the trophy and P5,000 cash prize. In the Senior Division, 69-year old Rodolfo Lanuza Jr. of Boac tied with Rosauro Garay and Gualberto Lusterio for the top award but eventually landed in first place after tie-breaks. He also received a Trophy and P5,000 cash. Organized by Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc., the 1st Governor’s Chess Cup was supported by Gov. Presby Velasco, Cong.
