PADERNA IN IMPRESSIVE WIN IN AUSTRALIA

PhilBoxing.com

Rugged Jun Paderna scored an impressive six round unanimous decision over Australia ’s Lincoln Stewart at the Town Hall in Malvern, Melbourne., Thursday.

Promoter Peter Maniatis said the sell-out crowd saw Paderna “fight his heart out” against Stewart who had fought only one round since being held to a draw by Eddie Delic in a Victoria State welterweight title fight in July 2002. In his last fight Stewart scored a first round knockout win over Jean Claude on November 16, 2007.

Maniatis reported that Paderna came out “throwiung huge body shots and shots to the head” in the first two rounds but appeared to lose steam in the third after having to shed off over two-and-a-half pounds to make the junior welterweight limit. However, to the credit of the Filipino he came out hard in the fourth round causing Stewart to bleed from his nose and after an even fifth round Maniatis said Paderna “came out and closed the show in the sixth.”

All three judges scored the fight for Paderna. Malcolm Bulner, a former Sri Lankan Olympic boxer scored it 59-55, Matt Ropis 59-56 and Andrew Cambell 59-55. With the win Paderna who fights out of Dido Bohol’s stable in Sydney improved to 10-10-2 with 4 KO’s while Stewart dropped to 14-4-1 with 12 KO’s.

In his last fight on April 11, Paderna lost a majority decision to Gairy St. Clair who once fought for the IBF world super featherweight title and dropped a split decision to Malcolm Klassen of South Africa.

Maniatis, Australia’s “Promoter of the Year” in 2007 and host of his highly popular TV boxing show said Paderna “is one hell of a tough fighter. He deserved to win.” Maniatis said he is “looking to put more Philippine boxers” on his next promotion in June and added, maybe even Ranee Ganoy” the lightweight sensation nicknamed “KO Kid” because of his awesome punching power.
