SPORTS SHORTS 16: EDDIE HEARN PLANS FOR GARCIA-HANEY AND JOSHUA-FURY By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Wed, 06 Jan 2021 Per BoxingScene.com the World Boxing Council (WBC) is prepared to call for interim lightweight champion Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) to negotiate a mandatory title fight against WBC lightweight titlist Devin Haney. The 22-year old Instagram sensation from Victorville, California has called for a clash with Gervonta Davis (24-0, 23KOs), the hard punching WBA (Super) super featherweight titlist and WBA (Regular) lightweight title holder. * * * Haney (25-0, 15KOs) was at the ringside during the Garcia knockout win over Luke Campbell. “Great fight,” Eddie Hearn commented on Garcia's impressive performance. He is the promoter of both Campbell and Haney. “You just boxed a final eliminator to fight him… [WBC title] fight will now be ordered.” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that plans are in place to call for the said fight. * * * Hearn, also the promoter for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, says it's very unlikely that a showdown with WBC champion Tyson Fury will happen in the United Kingdom when it comes to the first bout, per IFL TV. The camps of both boxers are now finalizing talks for a two-fight series in 2021. The first bout of the series would be scheduled in the early part of June. The location would depend on who the highest bidder is as host and the COVID-19 restrictions in the country. * * * The COVID cases in the UK are constantly increasing and holding of boxing bouts has been suspended in the country. Therefore it is next to impossible that the Fury-Joshua clash would be held there for the first fight of 2021. There is already a verbal agreement reached for a 50-50 financial split on their first encounter. Hearn believes the match will actually happen without major obstacles. "I think it’s hotting up nicely. The mind games are starting. AJ is working tirelessly away in London and I think Tyson has gone to Miami to train and I think AJ will be going somewhere to train soon as well," Hearn told IFL TV. * * * IBF, WBC Franchise, WBA, WBO lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez verbally attacked his top rivals in the weight category. The lightweight division is the center of attraction when Lopez won a twelve round decision over Vasiliy Lomachenko. He has strong words to challenge for fights with WBC champion Devin Haney, WBA regular champion Gervonta Davis, and WBC interim champion Ryan Garcia. * * * In October, Davis chalked up a savage knockout of Leo Santa Cruz. In December, Haney convincingly won over veteran Yuriokris Gamboa in twelve rounds. And last Saturday night, Garcia knocked out Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell in the seventh round. "I know y'all scared and sh-t, but let's just make the fight happen for the fans. Let's just do that. Don't overprice yourselves. If y'all believe y'all the best and y'all think that y'all can take this, then let's make the fight happen! Man, don't be p-ssy about it," Lopez said to TMZ. * * * Luke Campbell is having a bad impression after being informed that the judges did not favor him in their scorecards. "To me to win, I would have had to knock him out to win,” Campbell told IFL TV when he was back in England. “I thought it would be more fair on the scorecards, the scorecards, what I got told, were stupid, because for me it was a very competitive fight. Nothing much in the fight between us both by that point, but what some of those scorecards I was reading were so biased.” * * * The judges all had Garcia ahead up until the seventh and final round. Rey Danseco saw it 58-56, while Mark Lyson and Glenn Feldman had it 58-55, all for Garcia. Nelson and Feldman scored all the rounds to Garcia, except for the second round, when Campbell knock Garcia down with a powerful left. Danseco gave Campbell the fourth round, in addition to the second. Surprisingly, Danseco only scored a 10-9 advantage for Campbell in round two, the round in when Campbell scored the knockdown. * * * Stephen Curry's career-high score of 62 points in a game where Golden State won 137-122 over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday so far is the most impressive individual performance of any player in the league. He followed that up with another scoring spectacle of 30 points and a near triple-double performance in 31 minutes in the 137-106 burying win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday. He recovered from poor shooting at the start of the season. * * * After seven games, Curry is averaging 32.0 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game with 46.3 percent field goal percentage, 36.9 percent from 3-point range and 98.2 percent from the free-throw line. That signals a strong message of his potential MVP candidacy. He leads the NBA in wins above replacement player (WARP) which would make him a leader in the MVP race.
