TRAINING TEAM TO DISCUSS PACQUIAO'S CAMP IN PREPARATION FOR THURMAN'S UNIFICATION By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Tue, 21 May 2019 The important elements in Manny Pacquiao?s training will be taken up during the eight-division world champion's tour to New York City and Los Angeles for the July 20 battle with World Boxing Association Super welterweight champion Keith Thurman. ?I expect that the trainers will talk about how training camp will play out,? said Pacquiao?s confidante Sean Gibbons from Los Angeles as quoted by Nick Giongco of The Manila Bulletin. Pacquiao?s training team will comprise of head trainer Buboy Fernandez, Wild Card owner Freddie Roach as co-trainer and Justin Fortune as conditioning coach. They will discuss the details of the WBA Regular welterweight champion's training camp as the senator is ready to start his intense preparation for the undefeated American WBA Super champion. ?The choice of sparring partners and where camp will take place and when the senator intends to set up camp in the US will be discussed,? said Gibbons. The usual practice is for Pacquiao to engage the first three or four weeks of training in the Philippines, that could be in Manila or General Santos City, then the final stages will be held in the US at the Wild Card Gym. Gibbons guarantees that Pacquiao's training team already know what are the ingredients to ascertain his victory. Roach has been observing Thurman's latest fights and he believes the unbeaten champ's ability is slipping but still has the talent to pose a pressing tussle with the Filipino icon. "Thurman is a big, strong guy but his last two fights he hasn't looked as good as he once was. But I won't underestimate him and I'll expect him [to] come with his best because he's fighting one of the best," the veteran trainer was quoted by Sporting News. Thurman won by majority decision over Josesito Lopez last January and prevailed by split decision over Danny Garcia in 2017 before 22 months of inactivity suffering a deep bruise in his left hand. "I've been watching all his best fights for weaknesses. We do have a tough fight in front of us. It's a winnable fight but Pacquiao's speed should be too much for him," added Roach. "All Manny has to do is pretty much let his hands go a little bit more. I was very happy with him in his last fight, It was the most offensive I've seen him in a long, long time. It's been a while since he's fought like that, like back in the Ricky Hatton days." When he knew that betting sites made Thurman the slight favorite in their WBA welterweight unification fight, Pacquiao beamed his signature smile. ?Beautiful. That?s what I want,? Pacquiao told sportswriters at Century Park Hotel. ?Just like (Oscar) De La Hoya. It?s going to be an added motivation.? Pacquiao was the underdog when he fought Oscar De La Hoya who was the favorite but quit on his corner before the start of the 9th round. The fight was billed as The Dream Match, a welterweight superfight. The bout took place on December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. Betting numbers initially pegged Thurman as a -135 favorite and Pacquiao as a +115 underdog in their WBA unification fight in Las Vegas. This means that a $135 bet on Thurman will win just $100, while a $100 bet on Pacquiao will win $115. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
