HBO PICKS DUNKIN AS MANAGER OF THE YEAR By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Dec 2007 The pre-eminent television boxing network HBO has picked Cameron Dunkin as the “Manager of the Year” in its annual awards, “The Best of 2007.” Dunkin was described as “one of those rare managers who knows how to patiently bring along a young fighter – and sticks to his guns. He also has a knack of finding young boxers whom other managers did not have on their radar.” Dunkin has had what was referred to as a year “other managers can only dream of” with three of his boxers winning world titles in 2007 – Kelly Pavlik, Steve Luevano and Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire. He pulled off two major upsets within two weeks when he sent what HBO referred to as “the unheralded Filipino Donaire to take on the brash knockout artist and unbeaten flyweight Vic Darchinyan” in what looked like “a terrible mismatch.” After a fairly close fight over the first four rounds Donaire pulled what HBO described as “a shocker, knocking Darchinyan into never-land with a single left hook to the chin.” One week later Dunkin’s featherweight contender Steve Luevano scored an eleventh round knockout over undefeated Briton Nicky Cook in Cook’s own hometown. Donaire’s stunning fifth round KO of Darchnyan was named “Upset of the Year” and “Knockout of the Year” by the “Bible” of boxing, Ring Magazine as well as HBO Sports.
