NBA -- Spurs hack Heat in DeRozan debut
By Abdul Bassit Link PhilBoxing.com Tue, 02 Oct 2018
DETROIT -- The San Antonio Spurs escaped with a 104-100 victory over the Miami Heat on Sunday at the AT&T Center.
The game marked the debut of DeMar DeRozan as a Spur following his trade from the Toronto Raptors for the disgruntled Kawhi Leonard. DeRozan was held to a scant 18 minutes and finished with seven points on 3-for-6 shooting. He also had two rebounds and two assists.
It's a new era for the Spurs. After the retirement of Tim Duncan a few seasons ago, Manu Ginobili followed suit this past off-season while Tony Parker was shipped to the Charlotte Hornets to mentor the young guards over there and play more meaningful minutes after losing his Spurs starting point guard slot to DeJounte Murray.
While the Big 3 in San Antonio is forever gone, there is plenty of firepower left for head coach Gregg Popovich to tinker with.
Rudy Gay paced San Antonio with 13 points and five rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge had 10 and DeJounte Murrey chipped in eight markers.
Hasan Whiteside was huge for the Heat with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort.
Rodney McGruder had a solid 15-point perofrmance for Miami, which shot poorly from the field and from 3-point distance.
Dwyane Wade also played just 18 minutes and tallied 10 points and four assists.
