LUCAS MATTHYSSE HANGS UP BOXING GLOVES

PhilBoxing.com

Argentine fighter Lucas Matthysse announced his retirement from boxing on Thursday, barely three weeks after his knockout loss of his WBA regular welterweight title to eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

"Today I decided to hang up my gloves," Matthysse posted on his Instagram. "Another stage of my life is here... Proud to have remained at the top level for 10 years where I fought the world's best boxers."

The 35-year-old knockout specialist retires with a career record of 39 wins (36 by KO) and five losses with one no contest.

Matthysse has held the WBA "regular" welterweight title since January of this year until his defeat last July and previously the WBC interim super lightweight title from 2012 to 2013.

Only Ruslan Provodnikov (majority decision), Carlos Adan Jerez (unanimous decision), and Bernardino Gonzalez (disqualification) survived his KO power.

On November 6, 2010 Matthysse was defeated by a very disputed split decision by former world champion Zab Judah at the Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey. Two judges scored the fight 114?113 for Judah, while the third judge saw it 114?113 for Matthysse.

On June 25, 2011 he lost to former world champion Devon Alexander in another tightly fought, but highly controversial split decision defeat. The judges in the Family Arena in St. Louis, Missouri had the fight 96?93 and 95?94 for Alexander, and 96?93 for Matthysse.

On September 14, Matthysse was a heavy favorite against Danny Garcia despite being the challenger at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Paradise, Nevada. Matthysee gallantly fought, but Garcia knocked him down in the 11th round, a first for the Argentine challenger. The judges gave Garcia a unanimous decision of 115-111, 114-112 and 114-112.

On October 3, Matthysse once again was the favorite to win over the undefeated Ukrainian Viktor Postol at the StubHub Center, Carson, California. But Postol dominated Matthysse and a counter right hand knocked him down in the 10th round. Matthysse did not get up due to an injury in his eye which would make him rest for a year-and-a-half after undergoing an eye surgery.

His only no contest decision was against Mexican Rogelio Casta?eda Jr., a former WBC FECARBOX and IBA light welterweight champion. The fight was stopped in the third round of the scheduled ten-rounder on September 2008 at QuikTrip Park, Grand Prairie, Texas, after Casta?eda was cut from an accidental head clash.

Argentina will lose one of its well-liked boxer who is known for his aggressive fighting style and powerful punches that could halt his opponents thus the nickname "La Maquina."
