PH's Jelvis Arandela Calvelo finishes in a tie for 4th in Rockville, Maryland International Chess

Filipino Jelvis Arandela Calvelo finished in a tie for 4th to 8th places in the 8th annual Potomac International chess tournament held in Hilton Washington DC/Rockville Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Rockville, Maryland, United States.
The 38 years-old Toronto, Canada based Calvelo, who work as Aircraft Winder and technician at the Canada International Aviation Inc., joined Patrick McCartney, Darrin Berkley, Stephen Eric Jablon and Konstantin Molodtsov, with 3.5 points in the Under 2100 section.
However, after the tie break points was applied, McCartney placed 4th, Calvelo settled for 5th, Berkley is 6th, Jablon is 7th and Molodtsov landed at 8th place.
The tournament ran from July 20 to 22, 2018.
Calvelo, the pride of Gumaca, Quezon finished strongly by winning his fifth and last round matches to Edmund Chong.
Actually, Calvelo had a chance to win the title but suffered a heart-breaking loss to eventual champion Tejas Rama in the fourth and penultimate round.
Rama won the 38 player's field event with undefeated record of 4.5 points in five outings.
Dennis Norman, who held Rama into a draw in the final canto placed 2nd over-all with 4 points, the same score of 3rd place Michael Kats.
Last June 14, 2018, Calvelo topped the Albert Martinez June 2018 Quads held in Kenmore, New York. Calvelo tallied 2.5 points in three outings, the same output of Joey Orozco but enroute the title with a superior quotient.
Interestingly, Calvelo finished clear first place in the April 2018 Quick event held at the Kenmore, New York. Calvelo notch perfect 4 points, half point ahead solo second place Orozco who got 3.5 points.
It shall be recalled that Calvelo is a former chess coach at the DLSU, PCU and Emilio Aguinaldo College, Dasmarinas branch in Cavite reinforced his position as one of the Philippines? top non-master players when he ruled the Melaka Chess Open in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2014. (Marlon Bernardino)
