Bersamina bounces back in Tagaytay Asian Universities chess championships By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Wed, 30 May 2018 TAGAYTAY CITY---Filipino International Master Paulo Bersamina rebounded with victories over his respective rival to remain in contention in the fifth round of the 2018 Tagaytay Asian Universities chess championships at the Tagaytay International Convetion Center late Tuesday. Smarting from a fourth round setback to top seed International Master Xu Yi of China, Bersamina, the top player of National University team manager Samson Go and United States Chess Federation master NU coach Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. subdued International Master Muhammad Lutfi Ali of Indonesia and climbed to 4.0 points, the same output of Fide Master Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia, who brought downed Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano of Far Eastern University. ?With still four rounds left, it?s still anybody?s race,? said the 20-years-old Bersamina, who bagged the silver medal in the 2018 Philippine National Games standard chess competition in Cebu City recently. Xu, meantime, grabs the solo lead after beating erstwhile co-leader International Master John Marvin Miciano of Far Eastern University with 4.5 points in five outings. No less than World Chess Federation (FIDE) Secretary-General and 7th district Cavite Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. and Woman Grandmaster Wang Jue of Capital University of Physical Education and Sports made the ceremonial move to formally open the 2018 Tagaytay Asian Universities chess championships late Tuesday. Witnessing the ceremonial move are Du Fuhua (Head ? Capital University of Physical Education and Sports, Beijing), Asia's First GM Eugene Torre, Maj. K.A Shiva Prasad, (Coach Osmania Univ, India) IA Bong Bunawan (Chief Arbiter) , Hashim Zainuddin (Coach Majlis Sukan University, Malaysia), IA Kwai Keong Chan (President, Hongkong Chess Federation) and Hong Feng (Head Shanghai University of Physical Education and Sports). In the distaff side, Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego of Dasmari?as City whose stint here backed up by Dasmari?as City mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., congresswoman Jenny Barzaga and national coach International Master Roel Abelgas halved the point with No.1 seed Woman Grandmaster Wang Jue to notch 4.0 points and create a five-way tie for first place in the company of Wang, Woman International Master Mengjie Qiu and Xin Nie of China and Woman Fide Master Sahajasri Cholleti of Indonesia. Woman International Master Bernadette Galas of Makati City settled for a truce with Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmari?as City. Galas along with Manli Liu of China placed sixth to seventh spots with 3.5 points each. Meanwhile, International Organizer Casto "Toti" Abundo of Asian Chess Federation announced yesterday the staging of the FIDE (World Chess Federation) Arbiters' Seminar slated on June 2 to 3, 2018 at the Rizmy Hotel, Cabuyao City, Laguna. The two-day FIDE seminar hosted by Cabuyao City, Laguna in cooperation with the National Chess Federation of Philippines (NCFP) and with the Asian Chess Federation and under the auspices of FIDE. The Lecturer will be IA Casto "Toti" Abundo and Assistant Lecturer will be IA Patrick Lee. The language of the Seminar will be English. The Seminar will give norms for the FIDE Arbiter title according to the Regulations for the titles of the Arbiters.
