CEBU---Country's First Filipina Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna of Albay Province emerged as the most bemedalled athlete in the field of chess competition as the 2018 Philippine National Games came to a close.

The 21-year-old Frayna, a cum laude psychology graduate of Far Eastern University, sealed her campaign with two golds in Rapid and Blitz competition on Friday, May 25, 2018 being held at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu here.

She also bagged silver in the Standard competition topped by Woman International Master Catherine Perena-Secopito of Bulacan.
Interestingly, Perena-Secopito is also a native of Albay Province but representing Province of Bulacan.

Frayna, the first Filipina to become a WGM and breach the 2300 Elo rating, will travel to Europe in pursuit of higher titles and more honors for the country in July to join five tournaments in Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium before concluding her campaign with a stint at the Malaysian Open Chess Festival on the way home.

National Master Carlo Lorena, the spokesperson of Albay Province chess team said in an interview that Frayna, alongside Grandmaster John Paul Gomez and Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales are expected to get a cash incentive to Albay Governor Al Francis C. Bichara for their latest achievements.

“We are very proud with impressive performance of (WGM) Janelle Mae (Frayna). She came a long way to achieve this feat. You have placed the Albay Province in the chess sports map,” said National Master Carlo Lorena.

Gomez bags the first gold medal for Albay Province after winning the Standard competition followed by Gonzales who ruled the Rapid competion.

Over-all, the Albay Governor Al Francis C. Bichara Chess Team won four golds and one silver and adjudged the winningest Province in the field of chess.

Completing the delegation of Albay Province Chess Team are Provincial Information Officer and Sports Coordinator Leonardo Flores and Mr. Jaime Nunez.
