Former Champ Junior Makabu visits WBC offices in Mexico City By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Sat, 07 Mar 2026 ![]() Former WBC cruiserweight world champion Junior Makabu visited the offices of the World Boxing Council in Mexico City, where he gave a brief interview discussing his connection with the country, what it meant for him to become WBC champion and his plans for this year. During his visit, the fighter from the Democratic Republic of Congo expressed his happiness about returning to Mexico and spending time with the WBC team. Makabu explained that this is not his first time in the country, as he has visited Mexico in three different occasions. “I love Mexico. It’s a great country. The last time I came I was in Cancun and I really liked it. Today I came to visit the WBC offices because I love The Green and Gold Belt and I’m very proud and happy to be here,” he said. The former champion also spoke about what it meant for him to win the WBC world title, describing it as the fulfillment of a dream in his career. “Being WBC champion is very, very important to me because it was my dream. Before I was not a WBC champion and one day I dreamed about it. I asked my trainer and we worked to achieve it,” he explained. Makabu recalled that his path to the title included eliminator bouts before eventually becoming world champion, something he considers one of the most important achievements of his career. The fighter also described the feeling of holding the Green and Gold Belt in his hands, saying it was a very special moment. “I always feel good. I always tell people my blood is clean and my heart is in everything I do. I love the WBC,” he said. Finally, Makabu spoke about his plans for this year and confirmed that he remains focused on his career, with new fights on the horizon. “Right now my plan is to keep fighting. I am the WBC Africa champion and I have a fight coming soon, a mandatory fight. I will be champion again. I also spoke with President Mauricio to support what I am doing for boxing in my country and in my academy,” he said. Makabu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to boxing and the WBC, emphasizing that he will continue working to represent the WBC and develop the sport throughout the African continent.
