NBA -- Mapping out the future in the Far East through NBA Cares By Vicente Chavez PhilBoxing.com Thu, 05 Oct 2017 ![]() ILOILO CITY --Since opening its doors to the global community nearly four decades ago, the pursuit to build a better future has always been on point for the National Basketball Association. Through the NBA Cares program, the league?s global social responsibility initiative, the NBA is driven more than ever to enrich local communities and promote grassroots basketball. This October 4, the Minnesota Timberwolves will take part in the dedication of an NBA Cares Learn and Play Center at Huaying Migrant School. It's part of the hoopla that surrounds the China Games 2017, a pair of preseason exhibition matches that will help usher the upcoming regular season. In partnership with Clear, Dongfeng Nissan, Master Kong and SAP, the pack of ambassadors from Minnesota is set to unveil two newly refurbished outdoor basketball courts and a new student reading and learning center. Following the dedication ceremony, Timberwolves and NBA legend Mengke Bateer will host a basketball skills clinic for 100 students from the school. The said clinic will teach the fundamentals of the game and promote health in fitness among the young bloods. NBA China Games 2017 will feature two matches between the reigning and defending champion Golden State Warriors and the Timberwolves. Their first joust is October 5 at the Shenzhen Universiade Center in Shenzhen followed by an encore at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai on October 8. While the Warriors are no strangers to China, having visited this country in 2008 and 2013 as well, this marks the first visit for the Timberwolves, who last in Asia was a game in Japan in 1999. October is here and winter is beckoning. But the excitement for #ThisIsWhyWePlay moments is just as warm as the equatorial heat of the sun in the Far East.
