MCGREGOR GIVES A FIGHT BUT MAYWEATHER IS THE BETTER FIGHTER

PhilBoxing.com

Conor McGregor performed beyond expectations by fighting Floyd Mayweather up to the 10th round and got some surprising punch statistics to show an awesome performance of a professional boxing debutante. Even if the UFC star was defeated by TKO, he connected 117 punches on the greatest defensive boxer of all-time. His stats were 30 more punches than Manny Pacquiao landed on Mayweather and only six punches fewer than Canelo Alvarez did.

The CompuBox punchstats are as follows:
Total Punches
Mayweather 170/320 53%
McGregor 111/430 26%
Jabs
Mayweather 18/59 31%
McGregor 27/98 28%
Power Punches
Mayweather 152/261 58%
McGregor 84/332 25%

Referee Robert Byrd put emphasis on his final message to the fighters, referring to McGregor by saying: ?This will be a clean fight ? under boxing rules.? McGregor was warned for punching the back of Mayweather?s head early in the third round. Mayweather outpointed McGregor on blows connected. The lead was piled by Mayweather in the later rounds, as McGregor had a 42-28 advantage in punches landed after four rounds.

Mayweather exploded his arsenal in his most dominant round of the fight, the ninth round, battering the exhausted McGregor with power shots. In the 10th, Mayweather connected several unanswered punches and McGregor was groggy, so the fight was stopped.

* * *

?I thought it was close though and I thought it was a bit of an early stoppage," declared McGregor. "I was just a little fatigued. He was just a lot more composed with his shots." He praised Maywesther though. ?I have to give it to him, that?s what 50 pro fights will do for you.?

By improving his professional record to 50-0, Mayweather surpassed the record of former world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano (49-0) for most wins without a loss or tie in boxing history. Mayweather became only the sixth champion boxer to win 50 consecutive fights to start his career after Julio Cesar Chavez (87 wins), Nino Benvenuti (65), Willie Pep (62), Carlos Zarate (52) and Tom Bogs (52).

?Rocky Marciano is a legend and I look forward to going down in the hall of fame,? Mayweather said. "He's a lot better than I thought he was," Mayweather referred to McGregor's toughness. "He used different angles. He was a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight."

Judge Dave Moretti awarded McGregor each of the first three rounds and had Mayweather ahead 87-83 entering the 10th round. Judges Guido Cavalleri (89-81) and Burt Clements (89-82) had Mayweather leading by even bigger margins than Moretti. Cavalleri and Clements gave McGregor only the first round, but both saw Mayweather winning each of the following eight rounds.

?I think that?s very, very biased,? McGregor said during the post-fight press conference. ?I?m actually shocked at that. I thought I won the first three rounds clearly. The fourth round could be argued either way. Say 3-1, and then he started to take over then. And I thought I snuck in eight, round eight. Then he won nine and got the stoppage in 10."

The official attendance in the Mayweather-McGregor fight was just 14,623 at the T-Mobile Arena, more than 5,000 seats were vacant. T-Mobile Arena can accommodate about 20,500 persons for a boxing match. There were several sections toward the upper portions of the arena that were completely empty Saturday night. Prices for tickets were $10,000, $7,500, $5,000, $3,500, $2,500, $1,500 and $500.

The last main event at T-Mobile Arena was the Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. match which drew a capacity crowd of 20,510 on May 6. Although the Alvarez-Chavez bout did not earn as much money as Mayweather-McGregor because the tickets were much cheaper.

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions? CEO, said it was a great event, a wonderful turnout. He still expects that when the gate revenue is tallied that it?ll exceed the boxing record of roughly $72 million in ticket sales of the Mayweather?s fight with Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand. Mayweather also said during the post-fight interview that he expects the ticket revenue to earn more than $80 million.

Macy, Don Cheedle, Ari Graynor, Jeremy Piven, Charlize Theron, rappers Nas and Sean ?Diddy? Combs, and metal legend Ozzy Osbourne and his wife, Sharon.
