CHOCOLATITO COMPLAINS OF SMALL PURSE OFFERED FOR CUADRAS REMATCH

PhilBoxing.com

WBC President Mauricio Sulaim?n said at the Miami Convention that he wanted a rematch between Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras. But the world's top pound-for-pound fighter reacted to the offer citing a very small purse that's less than they deserve.

The undefeated WBC superflyweight champion further lamented that they cannot accept the rematch if they are paid so little. He said it would be much better if the fight be held in Japan for a smaller purse than in the United States where the taxes are so high resulting in a meager net pay.

The Nicaraguan champion said he is a four division world champion (minimumweight, lightflyweight, flyweight and superflyweight) but they're paying him small purses.

Gonzalez threatened that if the WBC will remove his title he will go to another organization. He said further that the fight contract is not yet signed. Chocolatito said Cuadras had given his nod, but he added the Mexican is the type of fighter that when given 50 thousand dollars he will grab it and Gonzalez said he won't settle for less.

According to Sula?man, Chocolatito is in a mandatory period, but because of the importance of a rematch which was demanded by both camps they prioritized it. The first fight was considered tough and controversial so the WBC set aside Gonzalez's mandatory challenger Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

Gonzalez reportedly earned $400,000 in the first Cuadras encounter. In the rematch he will be paid more or less with the same amount. It was a far cry from Vasyl Lomachenko's $1,000,000 purse against Nicholas Walters in only his 8th pro fight. And the Ukrainian is listed only No. 6 pound-for-pound by The Ring. The No.1 ranked fighter in the world accordingly demanded the same amount.

Sulaim?n told ESPN that if Gonzalez does not want the rematch, then the WBC will take care of the situation. Possibly the body will strip Chocolalito of his title and let Cuadras and Rungvisai fight for the vacant crown.

The WBC President cautioned Gonzalez that he should not embarrass the boxing body or even his promoter because they do not want to give him the amount he wanted.
