Arizona Boxing News & Notes With Don Smith: Trotter Out, USA Olympic Boxing Team & More

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing Fans, Veteran Iron Boy Matchmaker Mike Sanchez woke up on Monday morning (7/11) feeling that he had completed an impressive bout sheet for Iron Boy 34 show scheduled at the Celebrity Theatre on Saturday July 16 in Phoenix. He had his fingers crossed knowing that anything can happen in boxing; injury, change of heart or a money dispute- all potential factors in cancelling a main event bout. Any reason for a last minute card replacement is a punch in the gut to the promoter, matchmaker, fighter and boxing fan.

four days before the official weigh-In scale is to be delivered at Rita?s Restaurant on 35th Avenue in Phoenix, Canadian boxer Janks Trotter (10-3-1-10 knockouts) was forced to bow out after spraining a knee in a workout two days prior to coming to the somber reality that it would be a disservice to fans and his talent to fight with a gimpy knee. Trotter was to face Daniel Valdivia (11-0-10 knockouts) in the main event and the announced bout was greeted by brisk sales and enthusiasm within the boxing community. At least 20-30 Canadians were set to board a plane and fly to Phoenix to root for the Irish Canadian boxer they thought had a genuine chance to upset Valdivia; now it is a moot point!

Sanchez promises to come up with the best opponent available for Valdivia who asked Iron Boy to find him a tough foe and the order was filled with Trotter; but now the challenge begins anew.

The co-main features Carlos Castro (15-0) vs. Pablo Batres (8-14-1) and in a special bout, super lightweight contender Adrian Granados (17-4-2) takes on Ariel Vasquez (12-15-2).Castro fights out of Phoenix and the under-card is dominated by local talent including , David Courtney: Eben Vargas, Ryan Riddell, Daniel Garcia, Luis Espinoza, Jose Canez, Sean O?Malley, Jose Herrera Rodriguez and Cliff Jordan. It is a card that should be appreciated by avid supporters of local boxing warriors. Tickets for the show are available at the Celebrity Box-office and online. Doors open at 5 pm and 1st bout commences at 6 pm. Iron Boy?s 2nd pro/am MMA show is scheduled for Friday, August 5; more details next week.

USA Boxing Team: Olympic Boxing at the Rio Games will start on August 6 and viewers can watch the event on NBC and Live Stream. It isn?t clear when the network will deploy a live feed or tape delay in covering the sport. Rio is 4 hours ahead of Arizona in actual clock time. America will be represented by 8 boxers, 2 women and 6 men. It is the smallest delegation of men?s boxer?s that the U.S. has sent to a non-boycotted Olympics since 1908 when the games were held in London and featured mostly British boxers. No Americans attended that year.

Here are the names of the qualifying American fighters and the weight classes represented: Men?s light flyweight (49 kg/108 lbs.): Nico Hernandez-

Men?s flyweight (52 kg /114 lbs.): Antonio Vargas-Men?s Bantamweight (56kg/123 lbs.): Shakur Stevenson-Men?s lightweight (60kg/132 lbs.) Carlos Balderas-Men?s light welterweight (64 kg/141 lbs.): Gary Russell ?Men?s middleweight (75 kg/165 lbs.): Charles Conwell-Women?s lightweight (60kg/132 lbs.): Mikaela Mayer ?Women?s middleweight (75kg/165 lbs.): Claressa Shields. Most observers believe Shields and Stevenson are the best bets to medal; Shields won gold in 2012 and Stevenson is currently perfect (23-0) against international opponents. We wish the USA team good luck and may they represent our country to the best of their ability.

Around the Ring: In our last column, we mentioned that we heard rumors linking light heavyweight David Benavidez to a proposed show with PBC Promotions on August 5 at Gila River Arena in Glendale Arizona. Our inside source was a member of a group that allegedly sent a proposal to PBC to secure the deal and we also heard a second group was also in the mix with a separate bid. We asked PBC for comment and heard nothing. ABNN interpreted the silence to mean: deal over.

The latest news is intriguing. We are being told by a source close to Team Benavidez that David (15-0-14 knockouts) will fight Denis Douglin (20-4-13 knockouts) in Las Vegas, Friday August 5 aired on ESPN. It is a great opportunity for Benavidez as the boxing world watches him accelerate to possible stardom. The 24 year old Douglin a competent fighter who has two losses by TKO should be a challenge for the 19 year old Benavidez who doesn?t turn 20 until December; wow! Heavyweights Wilder and Arreola battle on 7/16 and we like Wilder, early. ?.. We also predict that Jose Benavidez Jr. (24-0-16 knockouts) will dominate Francisco Santana (24-4-1- 12 knockouts) in their July 23 bout in Las Vegas?..Elijah Garcia (Hammer Boxing) won a silver medal in the JO tournament held in Dallas and the young amateur fighter is headed to Indio to compete in the Desert Showdown on July 18?..The Top Rank show at Casino Del Sol in Tucson on August 6 with an all-star lineup is a winner; get your tickets at the Casino box-office or online.

VBP Results: super lightweight Fidel Maldonado (22-3-1) scored a dramatic second round knockout victory over Gerardo Cuevas (17-18-1) at the Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 9. The bout was one of 8 presented and promoted by Victory Boxing Promotions. In other contests: Ronald Baca was a UD winner over Randy McCarthy, Elijio Sena and Brandon Farron fought to a draw, Carlos Sanchez was a TKO victor over Christopher Russell in the first round, Jaron Ennis was a 4th round knockout winner Tavorus Teague in the fourth round, Jesus Alex Holguin a winner over George Roybal with a first round TKO, Brian Mendoza advanced to the winner?s circle with a UD victory over Daniel Calzada and Matthew Griego bested Marco Alcaraz with a second round knockout . The next Victory Boxing Promotions show will be held at the same venue in October 1st ?check the VBP website for more details.

Good Cause: Kick Boxing Coach and Trainer Richard Williams (Golden Cobra Center of Camp Verde) is seeking funds to send 9 Arizona kids to the 2016 I.K.F World Classic held in Orlando Florida for three days (7-22-23-24). The kids and coaches need enough funds to pay for airfare, food, lodging and miscellaneous expenses. Richard hopes the community will step up to the plate and contribute; so, these hard working kids can realize their dream of competing on a world stage. Mr. Williams has put together available sponsorship packages for businesses and individuals can make donations to the Golden Cobra Center. For more information, call Richard at 928-300-0281 or mail your contribution to Golden Cobra Center, P.O. Box 4583 Camp Verde, Arizona 86322? Until Next Time!
