Jhon Gemino Fights on the Salido-Vargas Undercard By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Jun 2016 Carson, CA:- Saturday, June 4th, a relatively unknown Filipino slugger will be featured in one of the undercards of a huge Mexican-vs- Mexican fight ? Vargas vs Salido on Saturday, June 4th. Not too many back in the country even know that he is in town. In fact, some of his own stable mates are not even aware that he left with his manager-trainer to fight at the StubHub Center in this city. ?We want to keep it quiet,? Team Gemino stated. The name of the fighter is Jhon Gemino. He fights out of the Kambal Kamao Gym in in Barangay Tangway, Lipa City. Gemino was supposed to fight Raul Hirales of Mexico, the same Hirales that was a victim of Albert Pagara last November at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. Although Hirales is a regular featherweight, Gemino?s team took the fight because they felt that they have a chance against Hirales who is coming off three successive losses. ?We are comfortable fighting him because he we feel we can beat him,? Team Gemino stated. ?He appears to be getting older and we can take advantage of that.? However, when Team Gemino got to Los Angeles, they were informed that Hirales would no longer be available due to a training injury. Since they are already in town, the folks at Golden Boy Promotions decided then to find him another opponent. And, they did. But, there is a small problem. The new opponent is a legitimate lightweight (135lbs). Gemino will be fighting a fast rising star from the Golden Boy Promotions- Christian ?Chimpa? Gonzalez (13-0-0, 12KO). The fight is slated for the vacant WBC Youth Super Featherweight Title at 130 lbs. Therefore, Gonzalez needs to drop 5 lbs and Gemino will go up to 130 lbs. There are some concerns from the Team Gemino regarding the weight discrepancies and initially, there was a reluctance to fight. But forces of personal circumstances prevailed and the Team decided to accept the fight. ?We fought bigger guys before and we spar with bigger guys as well,? stated Gemino. ?Therefore, we may be able to handle this fight but we are also aware of the weight differences and the danger it brings,? he added. Gonzalez fought regularly on the LA Fight Night monthly boxing shows at the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles. He hails from nearby Buena Park in west Orange County. Checking his record it was not too hard to understand why Gemino might have taken the fight. Gonzalez maybe undefeated but the guys he beat were not top of the line either. Only one name is of note, David Rodela, a former sparring partner of the great Manny Pacquiao. But then again, as most pundits say, Rodela has seen his better days, and sadly he is now relegated to what they call a ?gate-keeper?. But that does not negate the fact that Gonzalez is still two divisions higher than Gemino and a possibility of a one punch stoppage is there. Gemino was fitted a custom mouthguard last night. We know even that will not prevent a knockout, but we are confident it will give a lot of protection on his dentition. Top photo: Christian Gonzalez (L) and Jhon Gemino during Friday's weighin.
