FARENAS GETS NEW MANAGEMENT TEAM

PhilBoxing.com

LOS ANGELES, CA -- In an effort to resuscitate a career that seemed not going anywhere lately, Filipino fighter Michael Farenas has signed a contract with a new management team composed of Germaine Gillies and Bill Halkias.

The hard-hitting Sorsogon-born southpaw (41-5-4 win-loss-draw with 33 KOs), who will turn 32 on June 10, and his new managers signed the deal last April 6 here.

Under the three-year contract, if Farenas, a protege of two-division champion Gerry Penalosa, wins a major title, he is entitled to an automatic one-year extension. Should the fighter enter a multi-fight promotional or television agreement, the contract will be extended to 18 months after the termination of the promotional agreement.

His managers get 20 percent of gross sum but are not entitled to compensation for any sponsorship, TV or otherwise, in the Philippines.

Under the contract, Farenas' first fight could be held tentatively on June 2016. The now resident of Los Angeles, California could fight for a major championship should he win his first two bouts under the new management.

Since turning pro on September 19, 2004, Farenas has fought three world title fights, losing to Puerto Rican Jose Pedraza and Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa for the WBA super-feathereight crown. He drew with Japanese Taakashi Uchiyama, also for the WBA junior-lightweight belt

Before moving to the super-featherweight division, Farenas won the World Professional Boxing Federation featherweight title on October 3, 2009 by stopping South Korean fighter Jae-Bong Jang in 9 rounds.

Farenas has fought in the undercard of three Manny Pacquiao fights. First was against Mexican Baudel Cardenas during the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez 2 match which he won via third round technical knockout

On March 13, 2010, Farenas fought again in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey bout against American Joe Morales. The bout ended in a no contest after two rounds due of an accidental head butt which opened a nasty cut over Morales' right eye.

During the fourth and final clash between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, Farenas fought Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa in the undercard for the interim WBA super featherweight title which the Filipino lost via unanimous decision. Farenas was knocked down twice in the bout but recovered to deliver a knockdown of his own in the ninth round.
