NBA -- Mavericks squeak past Bulls, 83-77 PhilBoxing.com Sun, 17 Jan 2016 CHICAGO -- Following a career-high scoring night for Chicago's Jimmy Butler Thursday, the Chicago Bulls hosted Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks in front of a sellout crowd of 22,056 fans Friday night. The visiting Mavericks were greeted by cool temperatures outside and even cooler baskets inside the United Center during the first half. Forward Chandler Parsons was scoreless, missing three field goal attempts and missing his only three-point attempt. Forward Dirk Nowitzki did not fare much better from the floor as he went 1-of-7 from the field and 1-of-3 from downtown. However, 7 of Nowitzki's 10 points in the first half came from the free throw line. Nowitzki was the only Maverick to be in double digits going into halftime. Dallas did get a little help from its bench as guard J.J. Barea contributed 7 points. Dallas entered halftime down 10, with a score of 36-46. It was the opposite for the Bulls in the first half, as both Pau Gasol and Derrick Rose scored 10 points, with Taj Gibson close behind with 9 points. Gasol and Gibson would also tally 7 rebounds each. Chicago's bench would also help out with Kirk Hinrich scoring 7 points, and E'Twaun Moore adding another 6 points. Surprisingly, Bulls star guard Jimmy Butler was scoreless in the first half. Going into Friday night, however, Butler had averaged 30.6 points since January 1, which is the second-highest scoring average in the league over that time span. Only DeMarcus Cousins of the Sacramento Kings boasted a higher average with 32.9. The tables would turn in the third quarter for Dallas as their baskets started heating up, pulling within two at 59-61 to end the quarter. The third quarter also saw Chicago's Jimmy Butler get to the basket and onto the scoreboard with 4 points in the quarter. Dallas continued to stay on Chicago's heels and kept the game close throughout the fourth quarter, with Dallas and finally pulling away with just over two minutes left in the game and never looking back. In doing so, Dallas' Zaza Pachulia fouled out with less than 2 minutes in the game. Nowitzki ended the night with 21 points and seven rebounds while Deron Williams scored 18 points and had 6 assists. Chicago's Derrick Rose racked up 18 points, Pau Gasol tallied 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Taj Gibson finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds. No player on either team achieved a double-double. Both teams saw low scoring percentages for the game as Dallas was at 39% from the field and 36.4% from the 3-point arc, while Chicago was at 36% and 10.5%, respectively. Friday night also saw Chicago's scoring streak of 13 consecutive 100+ point games come to an end. During the streak, Chicago averaged 106.6 per game. This was the longest streak for the Bulls since the team posted 15 consecutive such games from February 17 to March 16, 1992. Including Friday's game, Pau Gasol has blocked at least one shot in 16 consecutive games, which tied the longest such streak for him since posting 16 games with 1+ blocks from April 10 to December 16, 2009. Gasol ended Friday night with two blocked shots. At 35, Gasol has posted 21 double-doubles so far, which is tied for second-most in the East and tied for fifth-most in the league. The four players with more double-doubles than Gasol have an average age of 24.5 years. Up next: Chicago travels north to meet the Detroit Pistons on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monday, while Dallas heads back to Texas to face their in-state rivals, the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. |
