NBA --- Late fourth quarter charge propels Hornets past Wizards By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Nov 2015 CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Hornets stymied the Washington Wizards' offense in the fourth quarter and went on to register their seventh straight home win, 101-87 Wednesday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena. It was another come from behind victory for the Hornets who two nights ago erased a 22-point deficit to prevail over Sacramento Kings in overtime. The Hornets went on a ferocious 25-0 run while Washington missed 17 field goal attempts as the Wizards settled for jump shots. Trailing 76-85 with 9:45 remaining, the Hornets tightened their defense and did not allow the visiting Wizards to score again until the two free throws by Gary Neal in the dying seconds with the outcome already decided. Center Al Jefferson, one of the Hornets' players instrumental for the comeback, said " We were down by nine in the fourth, we knew we had to pick our defense up. When we're playing well in our defense, that really dictates our offense. We're a tough team to play." The Hornets outscored the Wizards in the fourth, 27-6 setting a franchise record for a fewest points allowed in a quarter. Hornets' head coach Steve Clifford, who earlier in the day agreed to a three-year contact extension, was happy but not complacent, "It's a good win against a good team. It's good for our confidence but we need to get our turnovers down." Losing coach Randy Wittman was dismayed that his team gave up early, "We didn't make shots. We got to make plays. Makes and misses, that's the game, but you should never give up. I twice called timeout to lift their heads up. When you're feeling sorry, start pouting, put your head down, it becomes a snow ball thing." Nic Batum continued his superb all around game and finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds and a season high 11 assists. Jeremy Lamb had 18 points off the bench, Kemba Walker tallied 16 points while Marvin Williams and Jefferson both had 14 points and 11 boards. Former Hornet Gary Neal led Washington with 18 points, Marcin Gortat had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Bradley Beal added 17 markers and John Wall had 14 points. The Hornets improved to 9-6 and will take on Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday as they play the 5th game of their seven-game homestand. The Wizards dropped to 6-6 and will travel to Boston to face the Celtics also on Friday. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. |
