NIETES DECLARED SUPER CHAMPION BY WBO By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Wed, 28 Oct 2015 ORLANDO, FL ? The Philippines' longest reigning world champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes has joined a select group of boxing champions after the WBO awarded him the title of super champion during the opening day of the organization's 28th annual convention at the Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Park here Tuesday morning. Nietes was welcomed by WBO president Francisco 'Paco' Varcalcel and other WBO officials into the convention whereby he was introduced and his status as super champion was announced. Nietes will received his super champion belt during the Gala dinner Thursday night. Nietes, 33, from Murcia, Negros Occidental, became the WBO minimumweight champion on September 30, 2007 by defeating Pornsawan Porpramook of Thailand and went on to successfully defend the title 4 times. He moved up in weight and captured the WBO light flyweight champion by defeating Ramon Garcia Hirales of Mexico on Oct. 8, 2011 and successfully defended it 8 times since, the last one was against Juan Alejo of Mexico just two weeks ago at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA. Nietes (37-1-4, 21KO) went on undefeated for more than a decade and became the Philippines' longest reigning world champion at 8 years and counting besting the previous record of Filipino boxing legend Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde of 7 years and 3 months A super champion is a rare recognition given by the WBO, one of the world's top governing bodies of boxing, to its champions who have achieved preeminent status while holding the championship belt. Nietes joins the elite WBO super champions including Filipino 8-division champ Manny Pacquiao, Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine, Marco Huck of Germany and Sergey Kovalev of Russia.
