ROACH CONVINCED PACQUIAO CAN BEAT MAYWEATHER IN REMATCH By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 20 Aug 2015 Eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach believes the Filipino would beat Floyd Mayweather if he got another chance against the undefeated American pound for pound No.1. Although Pacquiao dropped a unanimous twelve round decision to Mayweather in a clash billed as the ?Fight of the Century? at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last May 2, Sky Sports reports that ?Roach reckons Pacquiao would have won that fight had he not been hampered by a right shoulder injury and has backed his man to come out on top should they meet again.? The problem is that Mayweather has repeatedly said that his September 12 showdown against Andre Berto in which SkyBet has Mayweather at 1/100, where a win would tie the 49-0 record of heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe has also maintained that the Berto fight will be the last for the 38 year old Mayweather. However, should Mayweather win as expected, Roach expects him to carry on boxing until at least his 50th fight. Sky Sports quoted Roach who said ?Manny would do much better in a rematch? if he recovers from the shoulder injury. I do think we can beat Mayweather, one hundred percent.? Pacquiao suffered a tear in his right shoulder rotator cuff in the 4th round of the Mayweather fight and underwent surgery in Los Angeles on May 7 and has made what has been described by some as an amazing recovery. Pacquiao is expected to return to the ring sometime early next year and Roach would relish another shot at Mayweather. Roach told Boxing News: "I don't know where Mayweather's going right now. I don't think he will stop at 49 fights, I think he'll fight to 50. I'm hoping that he promotes himself, maybe if he does he can make more money.? He was confident Manny ?would do much better in a rematch, if the shoulder gets better. We were doing well until the shoulder went in the fourth round and we had a tough time after that. I do think we can beat Mayweather, 100 per cent." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
