PUNGLUANG SOR SINGYU REGAINS WBO BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 08 Aug 2015 Pungluang (R). Thailand?s Pungluang Sor Singyu who first won the vacant WBO bantamweight title with a stunning 9th round knockout of AJ ?Bazooka? Banal at the Mall of Asia Arena on October 20, 2012 and then lost in his first defense to Paulus ?The Rock? Ambunda in Namibia on March 2, 2013 and later failed in his bid against Japan?s Tomoki Kameda who stopped him in the 7th round, has come back to win the vacant title once again with a shocking 2nd round knockout of No. 1 ranked Ryo Akaho (26-2-2, 18 KO?s) in Rathaburi, Thailand Friday night. There were claims that the knockout punch after an initial flurry by Pungluang was at the back of the head but the referee ruled it as a legitimate blow that ended the bout. The 27 year old Thai trained hard for almost three months for the fight in front of his hometown fans said it was putting him under a lot of pressure in what he told the Bangkok Post was ?the most important fight of my career.? Pungluang predicted it would ?definitely be a do or die battle and I will go for a knockout? which he accomplished in style. The Thai champion said it was his third attempt to win back the title and indicated ?I am lucky to have so many chances.? It was the second title bid of Akaho who lost to countryman Yota Sator in a WBC flyweight title fight in 2012. Pungulang?s charming manager Pariyakorn Ratanasuban said she was ?very excited? as she invested a substantial amount of money to bring the fight to Thailand just as ALA Promotions did when Banal fought Pungluang for the vacant world title and lost. Ratanasuban told the Bangkok Post, ?hopefully we will be successful but I do not underestimate his opponent.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
