GARCIA EFFECTIVELY ENDS MALIGNAGGI?S BOXING CAREER

PhilBoxing.com

Philadelphia?s Danny ?Swift? Garcia (31-0-0, 17 KO) kept his record clean via a victory over a perennial gate-keeper, Paulie Malignaggi (33-7-0, 7KO) of Brooklyn, NY via a TKO at the end of round 9.

Malignaggi, lately is more known for what spills out of his mouth rather than what he can do in the ring. His miserable 7 K0 record in almost 40 fights and his baseless and unproven accusations of Manny Pacquiao as a PED user speaks for itself.

Tonight at the famed Barclay?s Center in the Big Apple, Malignaggi was placed where he belongs - the retirement farm, by Garcia, the WBC 140 lbs. champion and the WBA Super World champion before a partisan crowd of about 7200.

The fight was a mismatched from the time it was conceived. The 34-year old Malignaggi had no prayer to beat a much younger (24 year?s old) Garcia in spite of Garcia?s not too impressive victories over Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson.

Although Malignaggi appears to have won round 2, he started bleeding from a cut above the right eye from a legitimate punch as early as the third round and he continued to bleed again in round 5. In the early part of the 6th, a cut appeared in his right check bone adding further to his misery. The cut on Malignaggi?s eye got worse as round 8th progressed and before the 9th started, the doctor took a good look at the cut. Late in the 9th after Malignaggi almost stumbled after a hit, the referee decided he has ?seen enough? and stopped the fight.

It would not be a surprise if Al Haymon made the fight just to give Malignaggi a nice retirement paycheck and entice him to stay as a commentator on ShowTime fights. ShowTime and him are good buddies.

But putting him against the undefeated Garcia was a mistake. Malignaggi had no chance to win and it needlessly placed him in harm?s way. First he has been inactive since April 2014 (read: ring rust) when he was miserably out-classed by Shawn Porter.

If nothing else, the fight only served as a gauge where Garcia is really where at this point in his career. This is because even if Malignaggi is old and rusty, he had some old tricks that can make Garcia look bad. Perhaps this is why Haymon put up the welterweight fight. He is looking more on what he will make further down the line in Garcia rather than worry about the fast sinking Malignaggi.

Fortunately for Garcia, he came out with flying colors. Now perhaps, Haymon can start looking for better and bigger money fight for Garcia that can also translate to more cash for Haymon.
