POPULAR, MULTI-TITLED INDIAN BOXER VIJENDER SINGH SIGNS LUCRATIVE PRO CONTRACT

Singh.

India?s popular, multi-titled amateur boxer Vijender Singh has turned pro and signed a lucrative, multi-year promotional contract with Queensberry Promotions that will see him fight a minimum of six times in his first year.

The Times of India newspaper reported that Vijender who has the looks of a Bollywood star and in fact had a role in the movie ?Fugly? and was also one of the judges in the reality show, will be based in Manchester and will train under eminent coach Lee Beard who previously trained IBO welterweight champion Ricky ?The Hitman? Hatton.

In what is regarded as a sensational career, Vijender Singh won silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games; a bronze medal at the 2006 Asian Games and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing; 2009 World Amateur Championships; 2010 Commonwealth Games besides winning a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games and was ranked the world?s No. 1 middleweight among the amateurs in 2009.

His coach Jagdish Singh who taught Vijender how to punch during his formative years said Vijender?s decision is ?very disappointing because the Rio Olympic Games are just a year away.?

The Times of India quoted Jagdish Singh who said ?for me an Olympic medal is far more important than turning professional. The country?s honor is at stake at the Olympic Games. As our soldiers guard the border without any vested interest, a sportsman?s job is to protect the country?s pride at the Olympics. There is more to life than running after millions.?

The coach was also concerned that Vijender?s decision would effect the morale of several boxers who are preparing earnestly for Rio pointing out that Vijender ?is the senior most boxer in India. Junior boxers aspiring to be Olympic medalists look up to him. His moving to England will definitely affect the morale and confidence of the Indian boxing contingent.?

Jagdish Singh added, ?at the end of the day it's his decision. I cant stop him. In fact nobody can stop him. He has a mind of his own.?
