MANIATIS SHOOTS DOWN PROPOSAL TO PIT PETALCORIN AGAINST MELINDO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 02 Jun 2015 Multi-titled Australian promoter Peter Maniatis who co-manages WBA light flyweight Interim champion Randy Petalcorin along with Jim Manangquil of General Santos City, has shot down Manangquil's proposal to pit Petalcorin against Milan Melindo who lost a controversial 6th round technical decision to IBF champion Javier Mendoza of Mexico last weekend. In an overseas telephone conversation with the New Standard/boxingmirror.com, Maniatis said "I don't want Filipinos to fight against each other. It's not good especially when they can go after world titles of different organizations." He said Manangquil is "a young man who gets pretty excited about Randy" and probably felt it was a good idea for two Filipinos to face each other. But added, "no way will we allow that to happen." Manangquil proposed what boxing writer Ryan Songalia of Rappler said was "a different title fight in the Philippines for Melindo. He wants to put Petalcorin?s belt up in an all-Filipino title match against Melindo. While it is true that matching top fighters from the same country is big in Mexico and England, the practice is considered taboo in the Philippines. Songalia stated that Manangquil "is challenging the status quo, saying that Filipino vs Filipino matches will elevate the sport domestically" but Maniatis who helps handle the international fights of Petalcorin in Australia and also under Top Rank, won't hear of it. Manangquil was quoted as saying ?Randy and I both would love to give a chance to other Filipinos. Maybe Milan Melindo, it?s a good fight for him. He just came from a controversial loss in Mexico. It?s a good fight for Randy and Milan.? Petalcorin who has a record of 23-1-1 with 18 knockouts stopped Walter Tello to win the WBA Interim title in China and then hammered China's Ma Yi Ming in April into submission in one round.
