The Bautista and Banal Fights- How Philboxing Was First with the News and Photos By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Wed, 09 May 2007 While many simply enjoyed reading the articles posted on this site about the recent exploits of two ALA Boys in Las Vegas, only a few ever wondered and cared to ask how their stories and the accompanying photos got posted on the site almost within fifteen (15) minutes after their fights took place. Philboxing, in their desire to provide ?real time? stories for their readers, took unprecedented efforts to report on the two fights which they know are close to the hearts of their Pinoy readers both in the country and abroad. To accomplish the feat, PhilBoxing brought in the two big guns of the website. The administrator himself (Dong Secuya) and the main contributing editor (Salven Lagumbay) flew to Las Vegas to do the job. Meeting up with them at that glitzy city was yours truly, the site?s main photographer based in California. Together we planned out how to best manage the very competitive process of being the first with the fight results and photos on the internet. First, Secuya applied for everyone?s media credentials from the Magna Media Productions, the outfit responsible for giving media people press passes to access the media room and the venue itself. On the fight night, Lagumbay, being the main writer was given a seat about 30 feet from ring side. I was given a position at the ?overhead photo section? about 150 feet from ring center just behind the main HBO TV cameras. Secuya stayed at the media center to monitor the PhilBoxing.com site and set up the computers to allow quick posting of the stories and the photos. I took the photos using a Sigma 120-300mm F 2.8 zoom digital camera lens and a Canon D30 digital camera. Lagumbay on the other hand was writing the stories as the fight unfolded. As soon as the final bell rung and the results of the fight is announced, I would run down to the media room, a good 8 to 10 minutes weave through the crowd and pass the camera flash card to Secuya. Secuya quickly downloads the photos, picks a good one and incorporates it with the story Lagumbay would post from his near ringside position. With that, the stories and the photos are posted on the Philboxing website within 15 minutes after the fight. Watching the whole scenario on how we planned and did their job, Rene Casibang an eminent camera man from ABS-CBN commented: - ?Ang tindi nyo, una pa kayo sa mga malaking news services!?. (You guys are superb. You even outdid the big news services). Coming from a media man who understands the business, the comments made our day.
