TACONING MAULS FORMER WORLD CHAMPION GARCIA HIRALES; WINS BY 10TH ROUND TKO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 05 Apr 2015 WBC No. 3 ranked Jonathan ?Lightning? Taconing mauled former world light flyweight champion Ramon Garcia Hirales before a hometown crowd in Mexico to win by a rousing 10th round TKO in which the Filipino southpaw risked a mandatory title eliminator for the crown held by Pedro Guevara. Guevara is scheduled to defend his title against WBC Asian Boxing Council champion Richard Claveras in Sinaloa. Mexico on April 11 despite the fact that Claveras is only ranked No. 26 by the WBC. Liza Elorde, wife of Taconing?s manager Johnny Elorde informed the New Standard/boxingmirror.com ?It was stopped in the tenth round because Garcia Hirales was about to fall. Great fight.? Referee Gelasio Perez Huerta stopped the bout at 2:53 of the round. In an overseas telephone conversation, Liza Elorde said Taconing dominated the ten round bout winning eight or nine rounds as Hirales ?kept running and clinching.? She said Hirales was on the verge of going down several times during the fight which prompted the referee to call a halt in the tenth round. Ms. Elorde said she hopes the WBC will now sanction a title fight against Guevara claiming that they were ?avoiding Taconing? who is ranked No. 3 and is likely to be given mandatory challenger status after the dominating performance. It was the 28 year old Filipino?s eight straight win and improved his record to 21-2-1 with 18 knockouts. The talented, hard-hitting Taconing won the vacant Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation title with an 11th round TKO over Virgilio Silvana on March 25, 2015. He had previously lost a heartbreaking technical draw in a title fight against Thailand?s Kompayak Porpramook even as he had the WBC champion in trouble in his corner before South Korean referee Jae-Bong Kin stopped the bout because of a small cut suffered by Porpramook in an accidental clash of heads in the previous round which raised a howl of protest from Taconing?s manager Johnny Elorde. Elorde raised the issue with then WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman especially after the referee deducted a point from Taconing one round after the accidental clash of heads. This reporter also spoke to Don Jose after watching a tape of the fight. The eminent WBC president created a panel to review the tape and based on its findings suspended the referee for one year. The 32 year old Ramon Garcia Hirales, identical twin brother of former champion Raul ?Rayito? Garcia dropped to 20-6-1 with 12 knockouts with one of those defeats being against Donnie ?Ahas? NIetes who grabbed Hirales? WBO title with a unanimous twelve round decision on October 8, 2011 in Bacolod City. In his last fight Garcia Hirales dropped a lopsided twelve round decision in a xclash for the vacant IBF title against Javier Mendoza of Mexico on September 20, 2014. Mendoza is scheduled to defend his title against former flyweight challenger Milan Melindo in Mexico on May 9. Taconing (R) puts the pressure on Garcia Hirales during their non-title fight Saturday in Mexico. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
