DONAIRE SHRUGS OFF JET LAG, GETS CRACKING IN THE GYM By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Mar 2015 Five division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire (33-3, 21 KO's) has shrugged off the effects of jet lag and has got cracking in the gym in preparation for his comeback fight against Brazil?s William Pardo (22-4-1, 15 KO's) for the WBC North American Boxing Federation super bantamweight championship at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in March 28. Donaire is determined to erase the memory of his 6th round stoppage at the hands of the bigger Nicholas ?Axe Man? Walters of Jamaica in which Donaire lost his WBA featherweight Super champion title in Carson, CA and insists he is ?a man on a mission.? Following a round of interviews on the ABS-CBN network and a luncheon press conference to promote ?Pinoy Pride 30 ? D Day?, Donaire who arrived Monday morning, worked out at the ALA Gym in Balete Drive in the evening. His father/trainer ?Dodong? Donaire told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that he went ten rounds on the punch-mitts and looked good. ?Dodong? said Nonito was scheduled to spar on Tuesday evening and he had lined up lightweight Jonel Alibio (18-18-5, 10 KO?s) and featherweight John Mark Apolinario (`18-5-3, 5 KO?s). Both sparring partners are expected to give Donaire a solid workout since Alibio is coming off back-to-back stoppages against Desson Cag-Ong over whom he scored a 1st round TKO on July 28, 2014 and Yuichi Yokoyama over whom he scored a 4th round TKO last November 1l. The 25 year old Apolinario dropped a ten round decision to former OPBF champion Drian Francisco last November 8, 2014 but came back with a 1st round knockout of Joel Escol on January 11 this year. Apolinario also lost by a twelve round unanimous decision in a WBA bantamweight title fight to Koki Kameda of Japan on July 23, 2013 and lost a ten round decision to former world flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez on April 26, 2014. Donaire and his father/trainer are scheduled to leave for Cebu on Friday where he will train at the ALA Gym which is ideal because of the number of top-class sparring partners. The father and son tandem plan to spend two weeks of solid training in Cebu. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
