SALUD MAKES STUNNING DECISION TO STEP DOWN AS PBA COMMISSIONER By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 Feb 2015 Lawyer Chito Salud has made the stunning decision to step down as PBA Commissioner and has informed members of the board that he will make a formal announcement at the games on Sunday rather than wait for a scheduled Board of Governors meeting on February 26. The Manila Standard/Viva Sports learned of Salud?s decision when he called several key board representative to inform them of his decision but we were requested the keep it under wraps. Former PBA chairman Ricky Vargas told the Standard he couldn?t understand why Salud who was ?doing a commendable job in overriding difficult controversies that came his way? although the Commissioner indicated he had given himself a four-year tenure and was sticking to it. Vargas said ?right or wrong I respect his decision and wish him well? even as he indicated it?s the last thing the PBA wants. Vargas said ?I can?t see anybody on the horizon who could take his place? although being a high profile position there are bound to be many individuals who would eye the job of Commissioner. He said ?It surely will be a very difficult search? and suggested that the Board create an independent selection committee to choose Salud?s successor. The 52 year old Salud, son of the late esteemed Commissioner Rudy Salud who left his mark in the pro league with his commitment to discipline, integrity and fair play, achieved his own mark during his tenure including the growth of the number of teams to twelve and an unprecedented upswing in attendance figures and gate receipts, shattering previous records. It was obvious that PBA board members led by chairman ?Pato? Gregorio and vice chairman Robert Non who reportedly underwent a heart bypass, were taken by surprise at Salud?s decision since there was no pressure from anyone for him to step down.
