DONAIRE LOOKS TO IMPRESS IN COMEBACK FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 20 Jan 2015 Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire is eager to make an impressive return to the ring at the Mall of Asia Arena on March 28 following his disappointing 6th round TKO loss to Jamaica's bigger and stronger Nicholas Walters to whom he lost the WBA featherweight super title in Carson, CA. Donaire trained at his father Nonito "Dodong" Donaire Sr's Boxing and Fitness Gym in Oakland, California watched by ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer, vice president Dennis Canete and ABS-CBN's sports consultant and the man who initiated the immensely successful "Pinoy Pride" series, Peter Musngi. Musngi told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports, "Nonito looked really good. He has been training earlier than in the past but said he is not yet as quick as he wants to be." Michael Aldeguer disclosed that they had "a good meeting with Donaire" whose fight in Manila will be staged by the famed ALA Promotions in partnership with ABS-CBN which has telecast most of Donaire's fights in recent years. He said Donaire "looked good, a lot better than when he first arrived in Cebu" to train for the title fight against Simpiwe Vetyeka from whom he won the title with a 5th round unanimous technical points decision. Aldeguer said they still haven't decided on an opponent although there is a list of possible opponents including Mexicans and Argentinians according to Donaire's father/trainer "Dodong" Donaire Sr. Donaire Sr told the Standard that while it is only the second week of training "Nonito still looks good and his spirits are high." He said Nonito is far more serious in preparing for his upcoming fight and is "not like before. He already looks in shape." The five-person entourage which will include Nonito's wife Rachel who is expecting their second child in May are scheduled to arrive in Manila at the end of February, spend a week in Manila in activities to promote the fight card which will also include a title defense by longest-reigning Filipino world champion, WBO light flyweight king Donnie "Ahas" Nietes. Donaire will fly to Cebu for two weeks of training before winding down his preparation in Manila one week before the fight.
