NBA -- Green, Grizzlies pounce on Magic 106-96 By Roman David Garay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Jan 2015 MIAMI- When the Memphis Grizzlies gave up a couple of rotation players and two future draft picks to acquire 28 year-old forward Jeff Green last January 12, there were some skepticism whether he was worth all that. Last Friday night at the Amway Center in downtown Orlando, Green showed them why. The 6'8" Green scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies held off the Orlando Magic 106-96. "He's learning how to play off other guys," Memphis coach Dave Joerger told the Associated Press after the game . "He's a good cutter, (coming) out of being a smart player and playing a good cutting system in college. That's kind of where he made his money tonight." Memphis' big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined for 30 points and 28 rebounds. Beno Udrich who started in place of the injured Mike Conley added 15 points and 5 assists for Memphis. Apart from out rebounding their opponents 47-39, the Grizzlies capitalized on 15-Magic turnovers as they converted them into 13 points. Memphis saw its ten-point fourth quarter lead cut to four on an Elfrid Payton layup with 1:35 left in the game, 100-96. Then the Grizzlies turned to its newly-acquired forward Green, who rewarded his team with back to back dunks to effectively pull away from the hosts. It was bitter sweet for the Magic, on a night where rookie point guard, Payton scored career-high numbers with 22 points and 12 assists, they failed to notch its first three-game winning streak of the season. Center Nic Vucevic added 18 points and 9 rebounds while Victor Oladipo chipped in 16 points and 4 assists. ?It seemed like every option we had, they kind of took it away,? guard Victor Oladipo expressed to the Orlando Sentinel post-game. ?We just had to play off instincts, really, and just go out there and figure out a way to score. But they?re a great defensive team, a great overall team. They?ve got great players over there, great defensive players over there. It was a great test for us, and we?ve just got to keep growing.? Orlando has now dropped 7 of its last 10 games and will have to brace themselves for another fight another Western powerhouse, the Oklahoma Thunder are coming to town Sunday.
