COACH BALDWIN TO PRESENT PLANS FOR GILAS PILIPINAS ON RETURN FROM NEW ZEALAND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Jan 2015 Newly appointed Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin will present his plans for the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team when he returns from what the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Search Committee chairman Ricky Vargas said was a much needed visit with his family in New Zealand." Vargas said they had met with Baldwin prior to his departure on January 2 and said that he will return on the 16th. Vargas said Baldwin had given no indication of those he would pick as members of his coaching staff although former national coach and Talk N' Text head coach Jong Uichico who works with Baldwin who is a consultant to the team had earlier indicated he would prefer to be an assistant than a head coach and that he and Baldwin share the same philosphy which is similar to that of the brilliant American coach Ron Jacobs who steered the team of Ambassador Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco to an epic overtime victory over the United States in the Jones Cup in 1985 and the Asian Basketball Confederation championship in Kuala Lumpur in January 1986 beating China in the finals. Baldwin who was a consultant to Chot Reyes when Chot was coach of the Gilas Pilipinas team that earned a coveted spot in the World Cup in Spain last year after finishing second in the FIBA Asia Championships in eleven memorable days in August 2013 earned the nod of the Search Committee after Reyes withdrew his name from the list of candidates. While Baldwin visited his family, the IMS Payroll Hawks announced its 2013-14 coach Tab Baldwin will not return for next season?s National Basketball League. A report by NZ Hoops said "Hawks chairman David Aflallo said the two parties had failed to agree to terms in renewing the contract and the franchise will immediately advertise for a new head coach. Aflallo was quoted as saying ?We haven?t been able to come to an agreement that suits both us and Tab. This is a mutual decision and Tab goes with our blessing. He?s leaving the team in a better position than when he arrived. It?s unfortunate for us but we are excited about this coming season." Baldwin said he remains an avid supporter of the Hawks. He has played an integral role in the development of many of the players and he is keen to watch their ongoing success. He said ?Although leaving the Hawks is a difficult decision, I have nothing but fond memories from the past two years. The 2014 season was a great recovery from a tough 2013 campaign and it was characterised by the teamwork of the entire organisation. From the outstanding group of Board members to our great general manager, Tanya Dearns and her predecessor, Paul Trass, to a tremendous team and support staff, I was blessed to work alongside all of you. I want to thank the many sponsors, especially Kevin Atkinson, who supported the team and was so instrumental in me coming to the Bay. Most importantly, I want to say that regardless of where I coach now, the Bay is my home and the Hawks is my hometeam. I will stay a strong supporter of the organisation and players in any way that I am able.? ?I look forward to the team taking the next step up and winning the NBL,? Baldwin said. IMS Payroll Hawks sponsor Kevin Atkinson said he was disappointed to see Tab go, as they also had a long-standing friendship. He said ?Tab is one of New Zealand?s greatest coaches, so it?s sad to see him go, but the team and management are in a pretty strong position and I?m sure there will be no shortage of interest from top coaches keen to move to Hawke?s Bay.? Hawks general manager Tanya Dearns said ?Tab has been fantastic for us, he is well respected by the players and has had strong relationships with our sponsors. I?ve also enjoyed working with him this season and wish him all the best.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
