NOW IBF LIGHT FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION MENDOZA TO FACE MAURICIO FUENTES ON JANUARY 10

PhilBoxing.com

Javier Mendoza.
The latest report in the confusing story on who reigning IBF light flyweight champion Javier ?Cobra? Mendoza fight quoted former four-division world champion Erik ?El Terrible? Morales who said Mendoza who he handles will defend his title against Colombia?s Mauricio Fuentes at the Municipal Auditorium in Tijuana, Mexico on January 10.

Miguel Rivera who earlier reported that Mendoza would fight Filipino Renan Trongco after we ran a story quoting ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer that Mendoza will face mandatory challenger Milan ?El Methodico? Melindo on March 28 in the Philippines, said the report on Trongco by the Mexican media was a mistake.

It is now being reported that the winner of the Mendoza-Fuentes title fight will next face mandatory challenger Melindo who earned a title shot with a comfortable unanimous decision over No. 10 ranked Saul Juarez last November 15 indicating that Mendoza?s bout against Fuentes is a voluntary defense.

"Cobra" Mendoza ended his preparation for the Fuentes fight in the gym of the Northern Zone, with the help of sparring partners Hector Flores and Adam Mares, brother of former world champion Abner Mares, under the supervision of coach Fernando Fernandez and Alberto L?pez trainer.

Morales said that Mendoza ?sacrificed the holidays because he wants to be a solid champion? which is also what Melindo did according to trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor who told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports ?there is no substitute for training.?

The 23 year old Mendoza who has an impressive record of 18 knockouts in 22 wins with 2 losses and draw won the title in a dominating performance against former champion Ramon Garcia Hirales on September 20,2014.

25 year old Mauricio Fuentes of Barranquilla, Colombia, has a record of 17-3 with 11 knockouts. He was knocked out in the first round by former champion Johnreil Casimero in May last year in the Philippines although Casimero did?t make the weight and was forced to wear ten ounce gloves.
