REYES-BUSTAMANTE TEAM UP EASILY BREEZES 1ST ROUND ASSIGNMENT IN MP INTL OPEN 10-BALL DOUBLES EVENT

PhilBoxing.com

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Sexuagenarian Efren ?Bata? Reyes opened campaign for a sweep of the MP International Open 10-Ball championship by emerging victor, along with long-time partner Francisco ??Django? Bustamante, Saturday in the doubles event of the same series at the SM-General Santos City here.

Reyes, who turned 60-year-old last August 26, and Bustamante, had Rubilen Amit and Iris Ranola at the palm of their hands in a 9-5 triumph highlighting the inaugurals of the two-man discipline of the $150,000 classic with a huge pairs of 74 hopefuls answering the blast-off breaks.

Reyes, who only last Friday crowned himself the singles kingpin, and his fellow Pampango ?kumpadre? were never threatened leading all the way over Amit, who, incidentally, was Bata?s partner in winning the 2011 World Mixed Doubles crown, and Ranola, both teammates of the duo in the national team.

The Reyes-Bustamante tandem vs. Amit-Ranola team was actually a matchup among world-ranked cue artists, Bustamante having won the 2010 World 9-Ball plum.

Amit, popularly known as ?Bingkay,? the 2007 World Women?s 9-Ball diadem, Ranola is part of the dreaded Philippine team that has captured the international pool world by a storm since the 80s.

The elimination round of the long-drawn out schedule that started last Saturday was supposed to end yesterday with half of the qualifying round pairings.

This will include the partnership between the sponsoring World Boxing Organization champion Manny Pacquiao and Ronnie Alcano seeing action.

Joining the Reyes-Bustamante team up in Saturday?s victory circle were the Jeffrey Luna-Jeffrey Ignacio tandem, winner of the First edition of the series held last September, also here, which upended the Roberto Ancheta-John Vincent Vicedo duo, 9-6.

Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan, another former world champion in the field, and ex-Asian Games titlist Gandy Valle, beat their counterpart Mark Mendoza and Jay Millares, 9-7 and so was the Taiwanese double of Liu Chung Han NSD Liu Ri Tang who prevailed over Arnel Bautista and Elvis Calasang, 9-6.

Demosthenes Pulpul, the guy Reyes defeated for the singles title, teams up with Oliver Villafuerte in besting Juanito Mingulto and Fernando Tan, 9-6. Losing singles semifinalist Carlo Biado and partner Anthony Raga made mincemeat of the Daiyo Urdaneza-Randy Abad team, 9-1 in the onlhy other reported result.
