ESTRADA UD WIN OVER ALVAREZ A ?BAD DECISION? By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Dec 2014 Alvarez. The ten round unanimous decision of WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada over previously undefeated Filipino Joebert Alvarez was, by all accounts, a bad decision. Alvarez who is ranked No. 8 by both the WBO and the IBF was quicker with his hands and fast on his feet got the better of the world champion in a majority of the ten rounds but incredibly lost by a lopsided decision handed down by the three Mexican judges. Roberto Valencia and Miguel Angel Velazquez both had Estrada the winner by a 98-91 margin while the third judge Marrin Gonzalez gave it to Estrada 98-92. The trainer of Alvarez, Nonito ?Dodong? Donaire Sr, father of five division world champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire complained about the decision pointing out that the promoters picked ?all three judges who were Mexicans and they wouldn?t give it to us since it was not a title fight and there were no neutral judges.? Donaire said the southpaw Alvarez was ?very good and hurt Estrada many times? adding ?I don?t know how they gave Joebert only one round.? The trainer who is also the manager of Alvarez said he had asked for a rematch but the Mexican handlers declined claiming Alvarez was ?too tough after they thought that he would be an easy opponent.? Donaire Sr also lamented the fact that the promoter of Alvarez, ?Tito? Zabala was not getting the promising young Filipino enough fights and that his bout with Estrada was after an eight month layoff. He said, Joebert?s promoter ?doesn?t give him too much activity? even as he expressed confidence ?we can beat Estrada.? Dr. Rajan Yraola in whose Quezon City Gym several top fighters train including former IBF junior flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero who will face Armando ?Cobra? Santos in an IBF flyweight eliminator in Hidalgo, Mexico on December 13 and also manages several promising young boxers told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports he watched the fight on YouTube and felt Alvarez deserved to win and ridiculed the judges scorecards which gave the Filipino only one round. At the same time Yraola noted that ?despite the long layoff, Joebert was in good condition.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
