Bautista Upsets Hohmann; Alcano Defeats Van Boening in Day 3 of Eliminations PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Dec 2014 Alcano. GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Arnel Bautista played remarkable shot-making by upsetting defending champion Thorsten Hohmann, 9-5, after three days of eliminations in the MP Cup Philippine Open 10-Ball champiosnhip at the SM City Mall here. The streaking Bautista, recent winner of the King of Sports Philippine Open 10-Ball tournament in Manila, capitalized on every miscue of the World No. 7 Hohmann and advanced into the Round of 32. A relative unknown prior to his recent winning streak, Bautista faces Roberto Gomez in the next round. Gomez beat local Jech Limen to join other unbeaten players Mark Romero, Warren Kiamco, Roland dela Cruz, Godofredo Ducanes, Ruben Cuna, Jeffrey Ignacio, Tony Punzalan, Christian Gariendo and Benjie Guevarra among others. Veteran Ronnie Alcano likewise created a major shakedown by beating the current three-time US Champion and World No. 3 Shane Van Boening, 5-3, in a match that ended prematurely. With Alcano leading, 5-3, and Van Boening about to sink the "10" ball to narrow the gap, Van Boening made a foul shot by not signaling the pocket where he will sink the last ball. Upset and furious with his own rules infraction, Van Boening surrendered the match and later accepted his fault. He was relegated to the losers' bracket. Group 3 round of 32 qualifiers include the indefatigable Efren "Bata" Reyes, Rodney Morris, Alex Pagulayan and Ramil Gallego. Reyes will be facing Morris in the winners' bracket of this so-called "Group of Death" section while Pagulayan, a Filipino representing Canada, battles Gallego. Group 2 Round of 32 qualifiers include Leo Bayet, Oliver Medenilla, Johann Chua and Carlo Biado. Group 4 qualifiers include John Morra of Canada, Michael Feliciano, Lee Van Corteza and Tommy Datoon. "I played bad, made a lot of mistakes. My opponent played well, too," said Hohmann. The German world champion needs to beat Mohammad Zulfikri in the losers's bracket to keep his hopes alive in the tournament offering $150,000 in prizes. Mika Immonen, the world No. 16, beat Antonio Lining, 9-3, and likewise advanced alongside Group 6 qualifiers Renemar David, Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Judy Villanueva. Michael Pesidas stopped journeyman American John Plunkett and likewise advanced together with Alex Lumpay, Raymart Camomot, Edwin Gamas. |
