PARRENAS RETAINS WBO ORIENTAL SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE WITH 1ST ROUND KO

PhilBoxing.com

All it took was 1:59 seconds and a crushing left uppercut for Warlito Parrenas to retain his WBO Oriental super flyweight title with a 1st round knockout against Indonesian challenger Hengky Baransano at the Barangay San Dionisio Gym in Paranaque, late Tuesday.

Parrenas looked sharp from the opening bell and caught his Indonesian opponent with a couple of stinging left jabs and solid body shots before Baransano crouched and gave the lanky Filipino an opening.

Parrenas unleashed a well-timed, picture perfect left uppercut that dropped the Indonesian on all fours and immediately spat out his mouthpiece and was counted out by referee Samson Libres at 1:59 of the opening round.

Parrenas who was coming off a twelve round unanimous decision over another Indonesian, Espinos Sabu last October 4 in Taal, Batangas had been sparring with former IBF light flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero who was preparing to face Mexico?s tough Armando ?Cobra? Santos on December 13 in a flyweight title eliminator on December 13 in Hidalgo, Mexico.

Also known as Wars Katsumata after an extensive Japan-based stint Parrenas showed genuine potential and Japanese promoter Ryuta Kato of the United Boxing International Promotions, his Philippine partner Edgar De Castro and British trainer Warren Evison told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports they are planning to negotiate a title fight against super champion Omar Narvaez of Argentina or a title eliminator against one of the top contenders.

With the win the 31 year old Parrenas improved to 21-6 with 18 knockouts proving that besides being a technically skilled fighter he does pack power in his fists.

In an action-packed WBC Youth super flyweight championship bout, undefeated Jhalel Payao of the well-known Omega Boxing Gym in Cebu grabbed the title from Rene Dacquel of the United Boxing Gym who was making the first defense of the vacant title he won by an 8th round knockout over Menard Abila last October 4 in Taal, Batangas.

After four rounds of give-and-take before a good crowd that included former Mayor Pablo Olivarez who stayed on till the fights ended and in keeping with WBC rules, the scores were announced with two judges having it even at 38-38 while the third judge had Dacquel ahead 39-37.

But the tide quickly turned as the southpaw Payao hunted down Dacquel with unbridled aggression and dug solid blows to the body and occasional left straights to the head while giving the champion no room to punch as he crowded Dacquel throughout.
The WBC Youth champion hurt Payao with a right hand in round three but Payao clawed back and wobbled Dacquel with a left hook in round three but failed to follow up his advantage.

Internationally respected referee Bruce McTavish warned Dacquel?s corner in the fourth round when the fight was momentarily stopped three times because of loose tape and threatened to deduct a point, but the action picked up and there were no more delays.

Dacquel knew he was behind on points going into the last two rounds and mounted a spirited comeback but Payao held his ground and although he lost the last two rounds, the southpaw had done enough to seal the biggest win of his young career and improve his record to 11-0 with 6 knockouts while the game Dacquel dropped to 12-4-1 with 4 knockouts.

Philippine flyweight champion Ardin Diale in a catch-weight bout where he came in at 114 pounds to the 119 pounds of Indonesian veteran Ricky Manufoe who was forced to wear ten ounce gloves because of his 5 pound weight advantage, had no trouble in disposing of his Indonesian foe, scoring a 2nd round knockout with a flurry of vicious shots to the body and head at 1:28 of the round to improve to 26-9-3 with 13 knockouts.

The United Boxing Gym handlers of Diale who is ranked No. 3 by the OPBF indicated he doesn?t wish to continue defense of his Philippine title and they are looking at a possible rematch with Japan?s Koki Ito who won the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title with an 8th round knockout of Diale last June 17.
