ALJOE JARO TO PUSH FOR WORLD TITLE FIGHT FOR DENVER CUELLO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Nov 2014 Promoter/manager Aljoe Jaro will push for a world title fight for No. 4 ranked World Boxing Council minimum weight contender Denver Cuello when he attends the 52nd WBC Convention from December 14 to 19 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Aljoe Jaro told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that he will ?talk about a possible world title fight for Denver? at the Convention and will discuss the possibility with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. The current champion is undefeated Wanheng Menayothin of Thailand who won the title when the corner of Oswaldo Novoa of Mexico threw in the towel in the 9th round enabling Menayothin to grab the 105 pound title on November 6 this year. Cuello will see action in a ?stay busy? fight against Indonesia?s Sammy Hagler who has a mediocre record of 18-27-2 with 3 knockouts this Sunday at the Angono Sports Complex in Rizal with the hard-hitting southpaw expected to win handily. The 27 year old Cuello who has a record of 34-5-6 with 22 knockouts suffered from a dislocated shoulder early in his title fight against then champion Xiong Zhao Zhong of China at the International Trade Center in Dubai on June 28, 2013 and underwent surgery, forcing him to have a layoff of over one year before Cuello returned to the ring and forced Jaipetch Chaiyonggym to retire in the seventh round of a scheduled ten-round bout last October 11. Hagler is coming off a twelve round unanimous decision loss to Pigmy Kokietgym of Thailand in a clash for the vacant Pan American Boxing Association title last November 14. Also seeing action on the Jaro-Platon Promotion International card on Sunday will be former WBC flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro who is ranked No. 10 in the world and is also featured in what is certain to be a lopsided tune-up fight against 28 year old Arjet Caballes who is coming off a 2nd round retirement against former WBC Silver champion Sylvester Lopez last June 28. The 32 year old Sonny Boy Jaro (37-13-5, 27 KO?s) who won the flyweight title with a stunning 6th round TKO over then WBC champion and ?Fighter if the Year? Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in March 2012 dropping the Thai champion once in rounds 1 and 3 and twice in round 6 is coming off a 6th round TKO over Ichal Tobida last June 28, taking him out with a vicious body shot. Sonny Boy Jaro has moved up and will fight as a bantamweight. Photo: Denver Cuello (L). Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
