HOPKINS-KOVALEV / FARENAS-PEDRAZA ON TV 5 OVER THE NEXT TWO SUNDAYS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 08 Nov 2014 Boxing on television continues to get a boost as TV5 will telecast two highly-anticipated fights over the next two Sundays beginning with the unification title fight for the light heavyweight championship between the ageless Bernard ?The Executioner? Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev collide in what has been billed as ?Bigtime Bakbakan? from Atlantic City, New Jersey at 1:00 p.m. Hopkins who will soon turn 50 has continued to defy the odds and the boxing pundits behind a record of 55-6-2 with 32 knockouts. He will put his WBA a and IBF light heavyweight titles on the line in a unification bout with klight Turning 50 years old in two months, Hopkins has continued to defy pundits about his capability to fight at a high level. Sporting a record of 55-6-2, with 32 knockouts, Hopkins will be staking his WBA and IBF light heavyweight belts in this unification fight against WBO champion Kovalev who has a record of 25-0-1 with 23 knockouts. Hopkins is coming off a win over Beibut Shumenov when he successfully defended his two world titles but he is expected to have his hands full against Kovalev who, by consensus is a dangerous opponent who is a power puncher who ripped Britain?s Nathan Cleverly with perfect jabs to grab the title from the Brit. In the main supporting bout veteran Luis Carlos Abregu, a heavy handed fighter who Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz turned down after the Brandon ?Bam Bam?: Rios fight which Pacquiao won in Macau, battles Sadan ?World Kid? Ali in an interesting welterweight scrap. While on the undercard French light heavyweight Nadjib Mohammedi (35-3, 21 KOs) will face Demetrius Walker (7-7-1, 4 KOs). Mohammed was reportedly one of the mandatory challengers for Hopkins. Next Sunday TV5 will telecast the IBF super featherweight world title eliminator between hard-hitting Filipino southpaw Michael Farenas and unbeaten Puerto Rican hopeful Jose ?Sniper? Pedraza in Puerto Rico. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
