SYLVESTER LOPEZ GETS REMATCH WITH UNBEATEN VARGAS ON SUNDAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 28 Oct 2014 Sylverster Lopez. Former World Boxing Council Silver champion Sylvester Lopez gets a rematch against unbeaten Mexican prospect Rey Vargas at the Arena Coliseo in Mexico on Saturday (Sunday, Manila Time.) The WBC reported that the 27 year old Lopez who has a record of 23-8-2 with 16 knockouts is ?tough? but that the 23 year old Vargas who has a record of 21-0 with 18 knockouts and is ?a dedicated pupil of trainer Ignacio ?Nacho? Beristain? is the WBC Youth super bantamweight champion and is ?set on conquering the absolute championship which is in the hands of Leo Santa Cruz.? The WBC website quoted Vargas who said ?we are on the right route for getting what we want ? conquering the WBC championship. We are taking important steps towards that main goal. This Saturday we will have another important challenge (vs Lopez) to pass.? Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde who handles the career of Lopez said his fighter left for Mexico last Sunday and got a chance for the Vargas rematch after a scheduled showdown with Eden Sonsona on a Gerry Penalosa card in Mandaluyong last October 25 was cancelled. Elorde told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports that Lopez ?is in condition since he was preparing for the Sonsona fight . He is in tip top shape and ready for the fight.? The eldest son of the late, illustrious world junior lightweight champion Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde noted that Lopez dropped Vargas in the 5th round of their first clash last March 15 but was forced to retire after suffering ?cramps? and that ?he didn?t come out for the 8th round.? There were other reports that claimed Lopez had hurt his ankle while one report said he had hurt his knee but whatever the reason Vargas remained unbeaten with what was officially billed as an 8th round TKO. Elorde said Lopez ?knows the style of Vargas? and he expects a good fight. Lopez is coming off a 12 round unanimous decision loss to Alexis Boureima Kabore (23-1, 6 KO?s) in a battle for the WBC International super bantamweight title in Burkina Faso last September 5. Lopez served as the sparring partner of Nonito ?The Filipinio Flash? Donaire during his preparation for the WBA featherweight super championship against South Africa?s Simpiwe Vetyeka from whom Donaire won the title by a 5th round technical points decision in Macau. Donaire subsequently lost the title in a crushing 6th round knockout to the bigger, stronger Nicholas Walters of Jamaica who was, at that time, the WBA regular champion.
