NBA -- Bulls stun Sixers

CHICAGO—In their only nationally televised game of the year, the Bulls made the most of the spotlight and a Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers on the eve of Ash Wednesday in front of a crowd of 19,927 at the United Center by squeezing out a last second win against the fourth-ranked team in the Eastern Conference, 108-107.

The 76ers have been without Embiid for seven consecutive games now. And the Bulls took advantage by forcing six turnovers and tying the game, 30-all, at the end of the first quarter. The Bulls continued to stay with the 76ers, again tying the game heading into the half at 57-all. While the Bulls fared much better from the free throw line, the 76ers were slightly better from the field and in the paint.

The game remained close as the third quarter started, but with less than four minutes in the quarter, Bulls guard Zach LaVine ignited the crowd with an alley-oop dunk off a cross court lob from Bulls forward Otto Porter, Jr., to put the Bulls within one, 76-77. When it looked like the 76ers were going to pull away, the Bulls clawed back in the last few minutes to go 105-all.

In the last remaining seconds, Bulls center Robin Lopez was fouled and made one free throw to put the Bulls ahead 106-105 with 17 seconds left in regulation. With 4.8 seconds left, 76ers guard Jimmy Butler made two free throws, putting the 76ers back up, 107-106. With 1.6 seconds left, LaVine made a floating layup, got fouled, and made the bonus shot, putting the Bulls up, 108-107, to close out the game. Or so they thought.

In a strange twist, as players headed back to the locker rooms thinking the game was over, the officials called the players back to the floor after reviewing the inbounds play at the 0.5 mark. Amdist the confusion, the clock was reset back to 0.5, the game resumed, and the half second ticked away to ultimately seal the Bulls’ win in confusing fashion, leaving everyone with an unfulfilled feeling similar to Doug Collins at the 1972 Olympics.

76ers guard Ben Simmons finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. This was Butler’s second visit back to the United Center since the Bulls traded him in June 2017. His first visit was when he was with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Bulls host the Detroit Pistons on Friday while the 76ers head south to square up against the Houston Rockets.
